This is an amp I did a fresh rebuild on and I changed every part in the amp outside of the transformers..All resistors were changed to carbon film Kos Speers which are the same Kwammies and a few other types of CF and a few metal films in high gain areas for grid leaks..I used a 35uf poly filter cap off the GZ34 which adds dynamic character and purity to any amp with a GZ34 rectifier.I went 220uf muse KZ bypass on the output tube cathode resistors which are vishay.I did use Huntington on the 15k paralled which bacame a 7.5k five watt.
Down stream the 80uf and 40uf were replaced with 180uf nichicons 105 degree. Power resistors are Ohmmite which I like as well as the mills and Huntington in the lower values. Russian Teflons were used on the outputs and from voltage amp to driver I used k40s.I used silver coaxial input wire that my daughter gets for me and although I didn't put in a 6cg7 yet,that will be next..I have an extra set of filament wires to work with and even tho this amp is a monumental improvement over stock,we always look for every last bit we can squeeze..The amp is dead quiet and even tho its 16 watts per channel,the charismatic charm this amp exudes is very satisfying at all volume levels.I am sure power is up by a couple watts and many more peak watts while distortion has been cut in half.

Definitely rebuilt with great parts. I always use audio grade capacitors on the tube cathode bypass too.

Oh yes David
The filter capacitors and coupling capacitors are well improved as are all the resistors being the originals were all out of tolerance.

Sounds like you should publish a table top compendium.

Had one. Modern sounding clean fast amp. I stupidly sold it because I was looking for tubey second order distortion. Huge mistake.

Thanks;

But it almost makes it worse - ha ha .

That's some good looking Yamaha gear you have there as well.

Here's the Sherwood S-5000 of mine Mike has.

The pilot is a very kind amp sonically..You really can't compare the two amps as one has more power and serves a different purpose.On the Fisher SA-100,you need to use 35uf film caps off the rectifier tubes and convert the 12AU7 to 6CG7s and that makes a massive improvement.

Of all my vintage amps I think this one is the best. For power the bid Duce is king but of all my 6V6 and EL-84 amps I love the Pilot.
Thank you so much Mike the pictures and detailed suggestions are very helpful.
The darn things are wired like an explosion in a wire factory.
I rewired one of mine and it has some noise now. With those pictures I know I can get it quiet again.
BIG TIP.... Replace the rectifier Octal socket!!! Its not a typical size but Jim has them in stock. Also check the wires at the socket. I own three SA232's and have bought several for friends in SE Asia. ALL those amps had badly damaged octal sockets.
Thanks again! Dan

Sorry to dig up this old thread. I thought I understood the power supply schematic of the 232 but something that Michael wrote in the description of his work has me second guessing. Is C33A the first filter off of the GZ34? Thanks for any help.
