At the downtown Seattle Goodwill I found a pair of the Ampex 2010 amp/speakers and the Ampex 620 tape deck. The 2010 units are of most interest to me. They have 6V6 push pull amps and the Ampex version of the JBL D216. They seem to have spent a lot of time in the room of a two pack a day Camel smoker though. Even so, not bad for $30.

It has been a long time since I have found anything tube in a thrift store.

I haven't decided yet what to do with them. The one who must be obeyed that I live with would not allow them to enter the house in their current condition. I am not sure that any amount of cleanup could ever pass muster. I think I will just store them until I decide what to do with them. I suspect that I will harvest the amps and the speakers. The tape deck holds little interest for me beyond its tubes and power transformer. Perhaps there is somebody out there that needs some of the odd parts from these to complete a restoration of their units?

Pirating the amp and the speakers is a viable option. Few wives would tolerate that suitcase design!

Excellent score!

It was that type of portable Ampex "suitcase" amp/speaker and tape recorder which the guy used to record our high school band concerts, and which led to my affliction with recording and sound.

Our good buddy John Curl could probably tell you all about those vintage products, since he worked at Ampex in the mid-60s.
