I got a call from a fellow Saturday morning who explained that he was in 8th grade, and was busy building his own guitar amp, a computer circuit using tubes….and he was also restoring a pair of Hallicrafters and Zenith radios (WOW!). He needed quite a number of different tubes. I told him I’d likely be able to help with most, if not all, and welcomed him over for a visit.

Gabe's father brought him to the house later in the day. Immediately, it was evident to me...this boy is gifted. Within minutes, he was talking over my head about tubes and circuits (not that my knowledge bar is set that high). His actions, his talk, his non-stop curiousity over everything he was seeing and touching...everything added up in my head. This kid is brilliant!!! He’s soaking up every little thing he sees and touches. He’s rattling off pictures in his brain at 24 FPS.

I had about 50 tubes on my bench for him to select from. Turns out...I had quantities of everything he was looking for. In all, he needed about 20 of them. Another fellow who was due to stop, before Gabe arrived late. I needed to tend to him for a bit, so I let Gabe loose on the Hickok and the remaining tests to be done on his tubes. A 30 second course on how the tester worked and he was on his own, in heaven.

When it came time to for Gabe to select what he needed, I turned to him and said, "Ya know, in the interest of promoting the hobby and keeping your expenses to a minimum…please take whatever you need…no cost." Both his father and Gabe were shocked? How could I do that? Why?

I say…why not? What an opportunity to help out a budding tube fanatic!!!

That visit is one part of this hobby I love so much. That felt great.

Hope to see you soon Gabe!

Spread(ing)the word.

Can I get an "A-men" for the Reverend Byrdshit! Way to go!

About a year ago, I posted an ad on Craigslist stating I had a bunch of gear I no longer needed and was selling it for pennies on the dollar..

Two young kids had their dad drive them to my house and they drove away with a vanload of gear! These two kids then restored all of it and are now enjoying vintage sound! And because they helped "clean" out my garage by wanting all of that stuff, I just gave it to them!

They got two pairs of large Advents with the wood veneer and beveled edges, a few ss amps, receivers...couple of turntables and a bunch of other speakers that needed work.

THEY are now Disciples of Vintage and have put together systems for their high school buddies! I get a call once in a while from one of the kids asking if I have a particular piece they need.

Nice to know my stuff went to good use.

This was me and my buddy Dalton.

We still have some of the same bits laying around to this day, some went to a good home others got parted and a small select few are still in our personal collections to this day!

Thanks Phil, ill never forget that day for sure!

What started as a lead for a set of Advents for Dalton and a second set of Cerwin Vega D-3s for me ended a week later in a van load of vintage audio equipment!

Chalk one up in the good column for ya Byrd.
If you didn't plant the seed, then you sure a hell watered it.

That kid will be recounting that experience long after we are all horizontal.
