a flame thread is a discussion that is usually:

1. irrelevant to the original post

2. takes over a page

3. ends in childish name calling

EG-

Some one herals bose speakers and asks for tweaks for one

10 people reply with "bose sucks"

20 bose fans then throw some marketing info at the bose haters

30 more "bose sucks" coments and 1 valid effort to help

40 replies by bose lovers who then start calling all the bose haters loosers that don't know audio

50 more "you suck" replies

... and it goes on and on...

this is a flame thread.

Flame threads grow exponentially, not linearly.

To use your example:

"bose good" 1 post
"bose bad" 4 posts
"bose good" 16 posts
"bose bad" 64 posts
"bose good" 256 posts
"bose bad" 1024 posts
...

:-)

But your point holds excellently!
