Hi,

I am recently retired and am about to embark on a speaker project for the first time. I have the cabinet building skills, it's the speaker smarts I lack. I like the onken style design or I will go with a traditional Altec design. My component are; a pair of each altec 414-16b's, (16 ohm) and 902-8t 511b, (8 ohm), do I need to go the bi-amp route or is there a crossover type way to resolve this. I appreciate any info and reasoning as to why.

Thank you,

Joe

No need to bi-amp, all you do is choose crossover component
values for the woofer/horn impedance. There's several free
crossover calculators on the web, just punch in the known
factors. Plan on an L-pad for the horn to match SPL level
with the woofer.

wow, thanks for the quick response! I am happier knowing this can be taken care of w/o bi-amping, another rookie question ..... how would one go about dialing in exactly what would work best, I have all the altec specs on both and I think they probably have crossovers available if they were both 8/8 or 16/16 but not if the impedances differ, is this something that i would hire someone to build and then I simply attach.

thanks

Try asking this at the HI Eff Asylum. It's better focused forum on what you are asking.
You have the internals of a good Altec speaker there. I provided a link to the Lansing Heritage forums below as well. Some searching and a few questions will probably get you a canned crossover schematic to start with.

I have those same drivers, but not using. The spec. you probably
don't have is the impedance at x-over frequency, which can be higher
than the 8 or 16 ohms. I have software to measure this 20-20Khz.

I might be interested in building some for you, shoot me an
email.
