Listening to a 1992 (and, thus, presumably analogue) recording of "Messiah" highlights from a live performance of local VT artists on the Classical music station of VPR (nearby repeater at 88.1 MHz). Went upstairs to fire up the Mac MR-67 via the SE 2A3 amp and the Duplexes.

Performance? Good, not great. Sound? Like being there. Some weird low frequency noise in the pickup (sounds like ground loop hum) but otherwise just dandy. Wonder what they recorded it on? An Otari, maybe? I think I'll e-mail them & ask.

FM can still get the job done, given empathetic engineering. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise :-)

all the best,

and...avoid those ground (earth) loops - we're going to be adding to them soon enough!

Agree, but live broadcasts can be even better., posted on December 25, 2015 at 14:28:14

When I am fit again, and able to carry a big - extendable to high-up - mike stand, I will go back to recording for Artsound FM, in simple stereo (ORTF).

And even share some of the results!

With time get a pair of 414s, and a tube based portable pre-amp and try Mid-Side (M-S) technique. ? One mike set to Left minus Right and a cardioid or omni for mono (left plus right). Mikes coincidental one above the other.

M-S, when used for location recordings, has a big advantage for post production or live OB, you can with the right box / sw move the array in and out - widen or narrow the image, and IF the box of tricks allows left to right.

So you can 'live with' a non-ideal array position. Not completely, mind.

IMO software for post-production and editing SHOULD be able to deal with M-S. Some can, but very few have good guidance. Most get bogged down in pop engineering issues.

One day I hope to be the mike positioner chap for a live OB.

Warmest

I'm lucky enough to live within close proximity to a few college stations that don't compress the daylights out of their signal, as well as WCPE handling all things classical - I don't listen as much off-air as I used to, streaming's mostly replaced that, but I'm glad to know it's still there.
