really hate them. The sound was flat and lifeless. This was especially noticeable on the presentation of the human voice. Krall and Mckennit were 2 dimensional. Thier voices were overly simplified and without nuance. Nothing sparkled anymore. Very simply, this tube killed the sound. Conversely, the 12AX7wxt breathed life into the music. One caveat is that the paint easily rubbed off with my finger nail. Should that happen? Needless to say, these tubes are on their way back to Tube World. Next up tesla groove tube Ecc83.

Sorry to hear you are disappointed. A few questions....., posted on March 31, 1999 at 18:58:36

How long did let them warm-up and burn-in before evaluating performance? Have you been monitoring the bias of your EL-34's a little more closely since the Sovtek meltdown? What were your speakers? What are you using for 12AT7's? Did you change/check the AT7's after the meltdown?

Tube type preferences are not absolute. However, it is puzzling that you didn't get the same kind of results I did. I guess it's just different tastes in sonics.

Have fun,
Tom S.

Tom ,
I'm in a quandry about why these tubes sounded so bad in the jolida and sounded so good for you. Maybe the associated equipment has something to do with it. My front end is a sony es cdp and msb link dac. The speakers are vandy 1Cs . I let the tubes play for a couple of hours but the sound was so crappy that burn in wasn't going to solve the problem. Now the jolida is triode wired. Could that be something? The bias is fine. The at7s are jan phillips. They appear to be fine. Bottom line is when I put the 12ax7s back in everything is wonderful.

I find them Ok, but not great-it depends on the rest of the system. For me they are a touch honky/shouty, and not very extended in the extremes. Thats why I recomend the Raytheon 5751s they are more focused, and extended. That said, one mans fav. is another mans junk.:-)

As Jack said: one man's favorite.....I find GE 5751 very good in the combination with my Philips 12AT7. On the other hand, my Jolida didn't like at all the Sovtek 12AX7WXT. Anyway, enjoy this marvelous hobby!

Hi Bill,
I've got the GE 5751s in my Jolida 302A, but my experience is not like yours. They seemed to smooth out the images, making things a little less grainy. They are a little more laid back than the golden dragons they replaced; but overall the change was not as dramatic as it seems to be in your setup. By the way, I'm using Vandersteen 2C and a Sony cdp and I'm currently using the Teslavok EL34Ls. Maybe your tubes aren't quite up to spec or the triode rewiring is coming in to play as you suggest.

Hope you can work things out.

Jim
