s. Could the 5751 have too much gain for most amps resulting in a britle and sterile sound? Might the ECC83 be a better choice? I'm currently using 12ax7wxt in a Jolida 302. Has anyone had any experiences with the ECC83s?

Thanks

The 5751s actually have a bit less gain than the 12AX7s (ECC83s). The way any tube interacts with any particular circuit is unpredictable however so in your rig the 'ax7 may indeed sound the best. Have you tried any other tubes (ie., either 12AX7s or 5751s) in the Jolida?

Joe,
I have some 5751s on the way which I got based on your reviews. I talked to somebody who seemed knowledgeable about tubes and he said the 5751 might be too noisy due to excessive gain. But you say they actually have less gain. I remember reading about someone getting good results with 5751s not too long ago on this very page with the identical jolida. The only pre amp tube that I have tried is the 12ax7wxt (not one of your favorites I know). I will keep you posted.

5751s have less gain than most 12AX7s. they are anything but sterile and brittle sounding-even the rayhteons, which may be somewhat cooler than others.

Me too. I wonder who that could be?

Right now I've got the Raytheon 5751's running and I don't think they will ever come out. I think it has a nice balance between detail and smoothness when compared to the GE JAN 5751 which sounded a little more warm and smooth with less detail.

I'm currently comparing some 12AT7's: Brimar black plates and Amperex BugleBoy France. The brimar is a bit brighter with less midrange smoothness when compared to the Ampe (the breath of vocalists was starting to distract me). The Amperex just sounds warmer and smoother than the brimar. I prefer the combinations of Amperex AT7 and Raytheon 5751 *or* the GE JAN 5751 and Brimar AT7. But those are just my taste preferences.

Please let us know how your experience with 5751's turns out for you.

Have fun,
Tom S.
