I have a cdp with analog attenuators which I plan on running direct in to a tube amp. Is this something that can typically be done? I would guess its much like using a passive preamp. What specs should I check? Dampening factor, impedeneces .... ???? Thanks.

It depends on the amp/cdp and interconnect length. I have a Creek OBH12 and have successfully driven c-j MV75 and Marantz 8B tube amps.

My CJ CAV-50 has only as passive preamp on the front end. No problem. But your sources need to have sufficient umph. My volume control is always at least half way up. Takes a little getting used to.

I just bought a used Reference Line Mod. 2000 passive preamp. to replace my old VTL Maxline preamp. My amp. is a tubed VTL Renesonce 70. The difference in the volumn control is, on the VTL preamp my normal listening level is at the 9:00 o'clock position, on the Reference Line passive it's on the 12:00 o'clock position for the same listening level. Plus, I'm getting far more transparency and a far broader, deeper and spacious sound field. This is through Spendor SL-100's with the new Rega-25 TT, AcousTech PH-1 phono stage and Meredian 508-24 CD player.

I'm using a Creek OBH12 with a Cary SLA 70B Sig and the combo sounds great.
