I've owned several different tube components over the years but never seriously got into tube rolling. Reading Michael's post below about specific EL34s in an Eico amp made me wonder, aside from overall reputation for a given tube model by manufacturer, how critical can that be for a specific component?

Dunno. Could be all psychoacoustics stuff. But, I swear that old Fender amps (esp tweed era) sound so much better with the OEM RCA tubes. Esp 7025 and 6L6GC black plates.

tube rolling not quite as big as changing coupling caps, but not far behind.
Also depends on the amount of total GNFB used in the amp. high feedbk designs, not as much of a difference. lower feedback designs much larger difference.

Perhaps tube rolling satisfies a need..., posted on January 31, 2017 at 10:35:07

to try and have more control over what we do. So, changing out the front end or power tubes makes us feel that we have made a difference for the better.
But, it sure seems that sometimes putting in a different brand of tube makes everything sound. It doesn't happen everytime, and the difference might not be jaw dropping, but sometimes it happens to be a positive effect.
I use the excuse to tube roll mostly as a chance to buy more tubes. Tubes forever!
