I just bought a pair of Lamm M1.1 amps. Incredibly capable amps but they just have too much treble energh for me. I am going to try tube and cable changes to see if I can knock down the treble a bit. Coming off a Shindo amp so I am a bit shell shocked :)
The Lamms have a single 6922 per amp. Currently they have Amperex Bugle Boy 6922 made in Holland, which I have been told are good tubes. Could someone recommend replacements that would be warmer and significantly more rolled off in the high frequencies? Just to be clear I am not looking for a balanced sounding tube or a neutral sounding tube. I really want one that most audiophiles would consider too dark on top. This is a system balance issue and my own preference for a warm organic midrange and a slightly darker tonal balance.

Thanks for thoughts!

The 6922 is not known for being warm. You can try the "reissue" Genelex variety, as it is about as warm as a 6922 gets. Talk to AA sponsor Jim McShane and get stock appropriate to your Lamm amps.

I agree with Eli. Warm and 6922 are two words seldom used in the same sentence. You might give Amperex 6dj8s a try as long as your amp won't eat them. Cheek owners manual on that point. You might also give the JJ 6922 a try. They sound very nice in my CAT SL1.

No such thing as a Bugle Boy 6922. What are the date codes or load pic.

Assuming they are of the Amperex family, you might prefer something from Mullard. Though might not be dark enough for you.

Cheers!

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest the EH 6922. I used them as input for a 6Y6GT amp, with LED bias, and they produce a very nice midrange and upper bass. They are not "fuzzy warm," but not cold at all, IMHO. The midrange might be called somewhat forward, but not at the sacrifice of bass or treble.

I use a pair in my Sli-80 and got a warmer midrange without losing detail. Had EH 6922s before that.

I didn't know there was a Bugle-Boy 6922 (??).

I took another look at the tubes that are in the amplifiers now and they say amperex 6922, have the graphic of the character blowing his horn, and say "Made in Holland" the code at the bottom is either a triangle and the code 2L2. Or the triangle is a "4" and it says 42L2.

Thanks for any insight on these!

Can any 6dj8 substitute for a 6922 in any amp? Or do I need to find out from Lamm whether I can substitute?

I will suggest "6DJ8 Amperex Orange World Logo, dimpled disc getter. Made in Holland.", which can be currently purchased from Brent Jessee @ audiotubes.com.

Better/fatter sounding yet would be the late 60's/early 70's production (dimpled disc getter version) produced @ Mullard Balckburn, but they don't come up very often.

I once rolled pretty much every 6922 type tube in the input position of an Audion Silver Night 300B SET amp, and those are my rec's.

The late 60's/early 70's Amperex Holland O getter (usually with Orange Globe logo) mentioned elsewhere is also a very good one if the dimpled disc version(s) are too fat sounding in your setup.

Avoid 7308's period, for the sound you want to achieve.

I believe the max plate voltage of a 6dj8 is about 130 V, while it is around 220 for a 6922, so if an amp has been designed around a 6922, it could be harder on a 6dj8, and so will not last as long as the 6922.

Check with your amp manufacturer.

There should be 3 more letters before or above the "delta"2L2..., posted on January 8, 2017 at 16:55:41

The three letters before would be 7L? for 6922 and GA? for 6dj8. Gold pins on the 6922. The delta is for Amperex Heerlen factory in Holland. But 6922 and a bugle boy character never on same tube. Something wonky there.

This is a an excellent site with info on Amperex tubes, with great introduction of how to spot fakes. Specifically Bugle Boy / 6922 conflict.

Great all around site many inmates frequent, with good descriptions of all brands of tubes. Discusses the Mullards which I recommended, and indeed I have experience with what they describe.

Cheers!

I have not tried them myself but the whole current prod. Gold Lion line of tubes errs on the side of warm. I use some of their other tubes and recommend heartily, them without reservation Jim has them.
A world of caution.- in most cases, people will say English tubes are your best shot at warmth. As Eli says not with this tube. I use Mullard CV2493s,a sub, which are not your average bear, but do not have anything warm about them whatsoever. Never met a 6922 that did. If you love your amps you may have to find your system synergy in another element. Best of luck it took me only about 7 years.
