 I have recently tried on my phone an app (SPL Analizzer) for android.
It works fine and it is also possible to rapidly check the frequency response of your speakers.
The phone mic of recent phones is remarkably linear.
For ambient checks it also offers a white noise generator.
There are so many similar apps in store that i would be glad to know the opinion of inmates on similar apps.

 My I-phone six has a remarkable mic for recording in it.I record stuff and upload it to email or text messengers and as long as you position the phone right between the speakers,it comes out pretty well.While it's not the same as the original,it can still give someone a pretty good idea of a audio system's potential,even 3K miles away.
