I'd go with the transformer coupled version personally.

I like the simpler design and cathode feedback.

Cathode feedback can be good, but it's use in SETs isn't common or well documented. Personally, I don't care for either of those circuits. ITs can cause considerable phase shift, so I'd pick the first one if I absolutely had to.

I'd do the simpler second one. I don't like all the grid stopper values in the first one at all, and there is a simplicity to the second one that appeals to me. I would use a nice Lundahl interstage, and a LSES power supply.

Have fun !!

Jeff

I'm not sure how well the LSES supply would go with 950 volts on tap!

Thinking it over and the nature of the question - I'd say neither of the above. Start with something easier to build and less dangerous to work with.

Really depends on the IT you have. Some IT are awesome. Some are not so awesome with severe phase shift and too bumpy FR.

I would build the IT circuit for simplicity and good sounding amp.

211 is an easier tube to drive than 845 so either one of these circuit should sounds good.

I've always wanted to play with 845's and 211's but I'd agree, 950v is a lot of spark. Lots change above 400 or 500v, like the needed wire insulation, choke ratings, obviously cap values, etc. Not sure why LSES is an issue; kind of both a philosophy and a tactical implementation, maybe I'm missing something there.

I would think the Lundahl IT will do the job nicely. A safe choice.

I only do two stage direct coupled 2A3 amps, but if I had to use a IT, I'd source something from Kevin in all likely hood.

Jeff Medwin

So build a low voltage one instead. My 813 SET amp started out using 845's. B+ is only 350vdc. Great sound.

Either will be fine if you use the right wire, posted on January 16, 2017 at 03:45:07

Or you can go and learn a bit about how to judge a circuit yourself. Discover what limits OPT performance for instance, or look into active plate loads...it is all out there, waiting for you to pick it up and free yourself from meaningless opinions...:)
