Now that I've discounted the use of a modified SMPS supply for ultrasonic DHT heating, I'm back to the "halogen lighting transformer" as a target of further study. Just yesterday, I was wondering whether the output transformer could be resonated in order to produce a quasi-sine wave. That might eliminate the need to construct an external filter when low-distortion sine wave is desired. I'm also wondering whether the small oscillator transformer can be resonated at a somewhat higher frequency than the natural frequency of the oscillator, in order to "pull" the frequency up a little. All of this will require experimentation to nail down, but in the meantime, I've come across an interesting bit of technical data Wikipedia. This describes the Royer oscillator. It's not quite the same as the halogen transformers, but it's similar in many respects, including the saturable cores used in the oscillator. Coincidentally, it includes info on a modified Royer that produces near-sine waves by resonating the transformer. The link below has the article. |
