I have not read much on power transformers and which are your favorites. I am looking for highest quality and performance for my 2A3 amplifier that currently uses a Hammond 272DX. I want to "upgrade" if possible.

The PT that I currently have, Hammond 272DX, has had two of the lead wire break away from the core wires. So, I am looking for something of higher build quality / reliability. Also, not sure if PTs make a sonic difference or not, but if so, which PTs in your experience are considered sonically superior. I know this is subjective, but at least its a starting point for me to investigate.

Please give us your recommendations.

Thanks, Pat

What are you looking for the upgrade to do?

Usually that happens if someone pulls on the wires. The solder joint for the lead out wires can be easily fixed. I have had some very nice transformers suffer lead out failure. I do like the 300 series from Hammond. Edcor transformers are also reasonable.

It's a shame they didn't rate the 5v winding at 3a. In doing that you open the design to also using 5U4's. If there is one component in a tube PS that does affect sonics, its the rectifier.

Or can the xformer do 5v @ 3a if another winding's current is reduced?

Banpuku - I used to buy Hammond power trannys but found they are A) quite expensive B)Made in Canada C) have 115v primaries. Which need to be compensated for with modern 120-122v AC lines.
So I switched to Edcor. A)well priced B) Made in the USA C) have 120v primaries. I use their output trannys too, very good products. - Pete
