Since no one in the speakers forums seems interested in this project I will start over with a new post here that is a different subject (Bored please take note and don't erase this one). It will be used with my diy tube amps and it is a diy project so I hope that qualifies. You guys love a challenge so I am hoping you can offer some advice.

I am trying to modify an older set of JBL Aquarius IV speakers. They were designed as dispersion type speakers to be used in small or odd shaped rooms, but the design was rushed to production and they never really got it right from what little I can find on them.

Anyway..... the woofer in them is a LE8T-2, a close cousin to the renowned 8T and 8TH. I am hoping I can use them in either a small ducted port enclosure or an open baffle. I decided to start with the small enclosure.

Ok, the tricky part is the woofer was mounted horizontally in the original enclosure, firing upward into a 360 degree dispersion cone. Bogus to be sure. What I am thinking of doing is mounting it on one of the sides instead and hoping the internal volume will still be close enough to work. I will seal off the top where it was mounted with a piece of plywood and a gasket for the trial run.

Wondering if anyone here has had any experience with the LE8 speakers and can offer any advice.

Lots of stuff on the web on JBL Aquarius IV speakers. I would caution against simply taking a jigsaw to them and essentially destroying them. The LE8T-2 drivers will need the surrounds replaced and your skill at that will determine if they are junk or not.

The cool, high efficiency speakers have pleated paper surrounds, these do not. Just get a pair of old JBL drivers in good shape and build something or restore the Aquarius. No matter how JBL didn't get it right, your plan will not improve their design. Anyway, there is something cool about dispersion speakers. Jut my 2 cents

...they are probably trash. Trying to find a replacement surround is doubtful. If you feel the design was a misnomer then it probably was and your efforts would be put to better use in finding a more suitable woofer. Just IMHO. Moe

If you need to replace the foam surrounds, you can do it yourself or have Orange County Speakers do it for you. They have the kit for your speakers.

It really has nothing to do with Tube DIY.

The speaker will not be firing upward into a 360 degree dispersion cone after the changes, it will be a front facing normal speaker placement. That ought to help some. I have also looked up the recommended volume for the 8T series and it is close to what the cabinet is, but I may have to change it some. I have refoamed quite a few speakers over the years so that will be ok.
As to not improving on it, not sure I agree with you because the main problem they had was it being a dispersion speaker I think.
My main question was if anyone had tried putting the T-2 in a cabinet or open baffle and how it turned out.
Not too worried about chopping up the cabinet because it has had a very rough life and is not in great shape to begin with. I may go ahead and re-install the speakers as original after I refoam them and see how they sound before I start any mods though.
Yes lots of stuff about Aquarius, but not much about using the T-2 in open baffles or small ducted ports.

Not the design of the woofer, but the design of the cabinet. Therefore the desire to try it open baffle or small box.
Already have ordered the surround kit.

In the first place I already tried that and got no response, and in the second place it looks like not everyone agrees with you.

You might find life a little easier if you didn't always think there was only one way to do everything. We have been here before.

This is not only posted in the wrong place, it's a crosspost. If everyone did this, the forums would be an unusable mess. You're the same guy who throws his trash on the road and thinks it doesn't matter because it's only you.

You missed by a mile TK; I recycle every thing. How about you?

You ought to try coloring outside the lines sometime. It does wonders for your perspective on life.

If I get no answer to my post in the "appropriate" forum (as I did not) what do you suggest I do? I am quite sure not everyone reads every post in every forum every day. I know I sure as heck don't.

I did not cross post, I posted in another forum when I got no answer in the first one. I tried erasing the original post but was informed it had been posted too long to erase.

Why not give it to the Bored to decide?
