Ampex ATR under restoration/modification and a loaner Ampex 351 modified for 30ips playback only (Shafer electronics), courtesy of Dave Dintenfass of Full Track Productions. Pic is of Michael "Romo" Romanowski of Paul Stubblebine Mastering cueing up one of Paul's masters on that machine.

Sold my old Ampex 900 series when I got the ATR.
Sold my Nakamichi 1000 due to lack of use.
Oh yeah, I have a nifty old AEG portable mono rig to go with my Telefunken Salzburg console.

Don't have 300 masters and refs, but I do have a few masters of Grammy nominees...

Nakamichi RX-202 -- gear updated and factory gone through a year or so ago.

Nak 480 -- needs a belt, (just been to lazy to change it)

My Naks prefer TDK SA Tapes, how about your decks ?

It is getting close to the time to add a reel to reel back in my system, maybe an RT909 or a Revox or ....

have owned several R2R's. and scads of Cassette decks

no more now.

Ido have a rebuilt tweaked panasonic F55v I use for long play time shifting off FM, it's a VHS Hi-Fi job.

and a Nakamichi B300 also rebuilt and tweaked, to make tapes for the car (A Nak TD35Z), and from borrowed CD's, until the CD burner budget comes off. It alos is used for replay at home, most people mistake it for CD.

I've got a cassette deck in each of my systems with one spare and two specialty decks, but don't use any of them that much. Having said that, i still listen to cassettes when driving on a somewhat regular basis.

Below is a list of the stereo cassette decks that i have:

BIC T4M ( three head, dual speed record & play )

BIC T3M ( three head, dual speed record & play )

BIC T2 ( two head, dual speed record & play )

    Onkyo TA-2060 ( three head )

    Harman Kardon TD-392 ( three head )

Outside of those, i also have two "special" cassette recorders:

Tascam Pro ( can't remember model, but it is 1/2 track )

Marantz portable "hi-fi" recorder ( mono unit with VU meter, etc...)

In the cars, i've got a Clarion head unit, a Blaupunkt head unit and a Sherwood head unit. All are cassette capable with external CD changers. Sean

    Tesla,

One beautiful deck the kx1200u is, I was in search of a 3 head machine and found this one @ a garage sale for $20. I took it home and to my amazement it worked but did require a little TLC.

It's the best cas deck I have by far, probably underrated out there compared to upscale naks and kyoceras. I think it has everything imaginable except mic inputs (strange for yamaha a musical instrument co., go figure). That electronic bias feature is way cool.

I just love the features, looks, and sound.

On a related note, I just was lucky enough to purchase a Kyocera D-801 two head deck on Epay, it will probably rival the Yamaha; we shall see, the Kyocera is only a 2 head but probably in the same league (IMHO). It will be an interesting shootout.

I'll ping you in this forum, once I make a comparison between the Yammy and Kyocera (has Nak type electronics, not sure how extensive). I'll probably post the results to the group; if it turns out to be a rewarding music experience.

Listening to the yammy right now. Kyocera is going to have its work cut out for itself, this sheee sounds damn good.

Until recently I had a 3 head 3 motor Sony. This was great, but the processor and all logic on it died. This really sucks as I think the heads and motors are all still great. Oh well, I may have to sell the whole transport to someone with the opposite problem.

I'm lookin for a great replacement for the Sony, maybe A Pioneer 1000 or a TASCAM 122. In the meantime I'm using an old Project/One, and I also have a Yamaha that needs belts.

One is a 280 Scully with many mods to the transport (mechanical) and mods to the original electronics by Paul at Tube Research. Playback at 7.5 IPS and 15 IPS up to 10.5 inch reels.

The other is a 270 Scully with a custom made 3/8 inch thick front plate to replicate the SP-14 plate. New drive motors, new capstan motor, special flywheels added to the the drive and capstan motors to further aid rotational mass/inertia for speed stability. Motor speed controller for the drive and capstan motors (TRL) and tube electronics for the output, (TRL). This one plays up to 14 inch reels at 15 and 30 IPS.

I have many different headstacks mounted on the HD Scully headstack mounts so I can change heads to match the recording. Taber, Saki, etc.

My previous reel machine was an ATR Services ATR-102.

Your Kyocera has more than NAK "type" electronics...it "is" a NAK. One of a very few NAK OEM products. Made to Kyocera specs by Nakamichi in the early 80's. Nice decks.

these remind me of the NAK BX series (2 head) machines. The cosmetics are Kyocera styling but the inerds are Nakamichi. Even the control layout look very much like a NAK BX-2.

Loved this thing when I used it. Has a number of very cool, useful, features that rally do what they're supposed to (eg. an auto bias optimizer feature, in which it tests the actual cassette the unit and optimizes bias, Dolby S, and many more...) Made the best cassettes I'd heard up till that point. Admittedly, haven't heard too many of the good ones, so the comparison is limited, but it did beat out a Nak cr7a and a Nak cassette #1...

All moot, though, as the last time I played it with any regularity was 7 or 8 years ago...

Revox A-77 (1/4 track) in good working condition, needs meters and a head cover.

Nakamichi 500 and 550, both near mint, both set up by one of the few remaining Nak-experienced techs.

Dual, Sony, and Teac reel-to-reels, all needing attention.

Akai M8, with dual single-ended tube integrated amps built in, gorgeous sound with the right (efficient) speakers.

Old reel to reel, not sure of brand, don't use it for tapes. It has built-in SE tube amps using 7591 output tubes. Sound is absolutely gorgeous using B&W speakers, Rega TT/arm/cartridge and Dyna Pas3 as phono stage.

Well, OK, the 910 is better, but they are unobtainium.

I'll second that. I picked one up a couple of years ago to replace an old Kenwood KX1030 3 head and a Teac R2R that finally gave up the ghost. Love this machine!

I have a 1976 Sansui SD7000 Deck. This superb performer was updated last in 1982 with new capstan and pinch rollers. The condition is like new and I have the service/calibration manual. I have owned many decks, however the SD7000 was a machine that outperforms most and I can understand why Sansui stopped production.

    Tascam 34 (4-track)
    Ampex late 60's tubed stereo 7" reel-to-reel
Pioneer quadrophonic reel-to-reel (hidden somewhere, collecting dust; used to be my workhorse)

Now I like to record bands live to two-track stereo, using a Panasonic AG-6400 portable hi-fi VHS recorder. It lays down quite a solid signal. Also, the tapes I record on the 6400 play back exceptionally well on my two consumer VHS machines.

I have to say that the Aiwa AD-F780 three-head cassette deck also does the original signal justice. I used to employ the noise reduction while recording until I heared how faithful the playback signal was without using NR. The noise used to send me running, but I like how the harmonics run freely in a non NR'd environment. I can ignore the hiss, & I dont even hear it in the louder passages anyways.

Here are mine (including ones that are gone):

JVC HR-S5000U SVHS used often for taping FM Stereo (speech) and playing pre recorded VCR's (sqeaks and will be fixed, bothersome auto tracking feature switches between hi-fi and normal tracks on some tapes)
JVC HR-3800 SVHS Best Buy would not fix but junk-outted the unit, so I got a no box Philips DVDR75 to play with and to make DVD's.
Nakamichi 682ZX in very good condition, rebelted and cleaned, superb sound clean and almost CD like in clarity and extension, but much warmer than most digital sources
Sony TC-WE 435 used for dubbing tapes and playing in 2nd system now
    http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/audio_hifi/cassette_decks/sony_tc_we_435/_review/173524/
Aiwa F660 not working well but was a great sounding deck (probably trashout)
Tandberg 9041X needs repair (turns on, motor stuck)--worth it? great sound indeed on 7 1/2 ips
    Nakamichi 500 (gone)
Several Sony and Aiwa cheap all in one stereos (which I use a lot to tape FM speech)
Finally, the wonderful (no kiddin') home PA system tape recorder (used to tape a series on FM weekly while we listen throughout the house--actually does a great job; 15 or 20 yrs old)

    Happy listening!
