 On my Otari MX-5050: I really see a lot of back pressure (spinning the opposite way to keep slack out) on the opposite reel when FF/REW are engaged. Normal?

I know someone answered this somewhere on some board : when the relays are intermittent and chatter are they bad and need replacing or is it cold solders usually or something else. Someone who had this issue here will know.

Thanks. I finally got a tape to try yesterday and play seems fine. REW/FF don't seem right.

 I've never had the problem, but I've heard that there is usually an electrolytic cap across the coil, try replacing it.

 Yes, back tension is normal otherwise the pulled reel would be free wheeling and cause tape spillage. There has to be some type of damping/brakes. It is normal for replays to make a sound, a click. Continuous chattering is not normal. You shouldn't fast wind or rewind an old, fragile pre-recorded tape. Any magnetic tape is fragile. Computer tape drives used to be made with vacume chambers for tape loops to keep out dust and protect tape. Rewinding and fast forwarding causes tape damage and causes the tape stack is be scrambled and subject to damage. Only play it at play speed or refrain from fast winding to find the track you like best. Moe

I have a relay chattering that makes the tape stop and go while paying so I'll have to deal with that. It is on the servo board. The reason I ask about the back tension is that with no tape on either hub when you put it in REW/FF it looks like things are fine. Then with a tape booth FF and REW are slow.

 If it's chattering, then the diode across the relay coil might be defective. Also the spring in the relay might be defective. MB
