 Hey guys I've got a pretty large cassette tape collection, but nothing to either play or make recordings on. I've had several good tape decks in the past, but due to age and use each one slowly bit the dust. I'd still like to have the format available to me, but I'm leery of jumping in again as no one makes these things anymore and parts are getting rarer by the day (not to mention people qualified/knowledgeable to work on them).

So my question to you guys: is there a specific cassette deck you guys would recommend to me that won't leave me in the lurch if it needs to be fixed? Or one that is plentiful and fits into the right sound quality/price ratio to facilitate rapid and less painful replacement?

 Perhaps a KX-530 or something like that. Perhaps a KX-690. Buy a couple of them. Be happy.

You might try the same question on tapeheads.

I would recommend however,giving everyone a better idea on what you want. Such as price, dolby/hxpro, ability to set bias, dual capstan, dual well, etc. Also, remember that cassette decks can be rebuilt or reconditioned.

 You might want to look at the last of the Denon better decks like the Denon DN740 or the Denon DN790 pro deck or the Teac 122MKII or the final Sony KA-ES series, IE: KA2ES or KA3ES. All should be available used on the bay regularly. Also, as suggested above, reading and joining Tapeheads.net is a very good idea too.

 Have you considered a Phillips DCC Player/Recorder. I know you can still find them new.Also it seems that Cassettes are selling again at a pretty fast pace. My Local Record Shop keeps selling out of all their pre-owned tapes and any blank tapes they can come up with.I just purchased a Sony T615 S Cassette Deck myself and I am looking at buying a DCC machine also.

 Although many wax lyrical over the Dragon, i personally would recommend the later model Nakamichi like the Cassette Deck 1 with adjustable playback azimuth and gear drive. It has fewer bells and whistles thus fewer repairs.
If your budget allows it, i would also recommend or the Nakamichi Cr 5 or Cr 7 preferably with the idler gear upgrade.
Another deck that is rarely mentioned is the Revox B215 with 4 direct drive motors and no belts or idlers to worry about ever. Fabulous sound as well. these can be bought for about half the price of the Dragon or ZX models and worth every penny.
