My Akai 365D sounds great in both forward and reverse. However, in reverse play the volume is significantly lower. Ideas?

As a neophyte with tape decks I hesitate to offer advice, but:

Clean heads? Are the heads adjusted properly? If the mechanical parts are in order one suspects electronics. The service manual for my GX636 has a section detailing forward and reverse amplifier level adjustment, your deck might also. That probably needs professional attention to accomplish.

Chances are you have some switches and relays to clean. Most of the time that is the issue with this series of Akai.
