Hi Rich,

I've been using a Purest Sound System passive preamp for many years and am happy with it. However, in past conversations I've had with Bobby of Merlin, he has suggested an active preamp would be better. I've been reading reviews of the Audible Illusions preamps and am considering auditioning an L2 line stage, if I can. But I thought I would post here first and get your opinion; have you had any experience listening to the TSMs with any of the AI preamps? For the record, I don't have the most recent version (lead-free) of the TSMs; rather, I have the version that preceded the most current (actually two versions ago, but with an upgrade).

thanks,
Jon

I have not used the AI preamp with TSMs that I can recall. I have had a few used units come through the shop over the years. They are nice preamps. They can be a bit hard on tubes. They are warm (though tube rolling has an effect on its tone). Never been particularly impressed by the bass repsonse of these preamps though. While these are nice preamps, they are not my ide of a ideal match... my memory keeps telling me that it would eb a bit too midrange wamrth.

What amp would you be using the AI with???

Happy Listening,
