I just wanted to get a general impression from the forum as to the merits of using the 6C33C as a SET tube. I have now in my possession a pair of Parallel SET monoblocks and the sound is very interesting. It is big robust and powerful but still with a lot of clarity and delicacy. Not as delicate as my JJ 322 perhaps but the overall presentation is impressive as is the sense of space and imaging.

Who has owned or does own amps with this tube and what was your conclusion about the sound?

Any Lamm ML2 owners? This is sort of the progenitor (and arguably still the best) of this tube in a SET. If you replaced it what with and why?

They can sound very good, a very powerful sounding tube. A lot has to do with the circuit they are used in. Mine used an interstage transformer and was pretty awesome. I have a current penchant for throated tungsten Eimacs.
You are not missing much by using your amps.

Those Eimac tubes are HUGE usually. I had KR Audio Kronzillas in the house some years ago and those are really awesome.

This is a return of sorts to the 6C33C. Many years ago I had a pair of Silvaweld OTL Reference monoblocks that used 4 of these per channel. I had to sell because the heat in my room was just too much from those monsters.

The Opus M50 monos I have now are just 2 6c33c per mono and they still get pretty hot. It is bearable though and the sound is a lot like you describe, powerful and very nice midrange. These are not interstage trafo coupled...a look inside seems to indicate self-wound silver foil/teflon capacitors...at least that is what they look like. Power transformer is a large toroid and the output transformer is a good sized EI core using Ni and Co steel alloys in the laminations. The input and driver tubes are shunt regulated (solid state though not tube) and the output is automatic bias.

I have 6C33C SET Monoblocks using all the Tango special Transformers for 6C33C. It was modded a lot hell and they sounds superb. Driver is 6CG7 and preamp tube is 12AU7 and I modded it to use 5AR4 or all variants of 5U4 types rectifier tubes. As far as the sound goes, 6C33 is nice sounding tube as SET but mine are running HOT due to cathode biasing. But for some musoc, I think the 6C33C is a bit edgy and not as refined as 211 or 845 or 45; etc.

I am not getting any edginess from this particular implementation. It is actually very smooth in the mids and highs. Is your 6c33c amp using negative feedback? If it is then could perhaps be something to do with that.
