Which way do you insert the 2a3 on a Fi X amp? The socket sizes are literally exactly the same size, so I can't tell where the cathod(large) pins are supposed to go. The socket is labeled with 1,2,3,4 positions, but I'm not sure what that corresponds to. Thanks!

1 and 4 are the filament pins, the larger pins.

If in doubt, flip it over and the two pins with the green wires are the filament (fat) pins (should be facing towards front of amp) The blue and red wires should go to the B+ and OPT.

That would be good advice except that unfortunately the amp you show isn't a Fi X and that design doesn't have a "flip it over "option.

On my Super X 2A3 the smaller pins go on top, the larger on the bottom.

Right. I just saw Fi 2A3 and missed the part about it being an "X".

Hi Guys - thank you for the tips, and yes, it takes a fair bit of work to get into the X.

Pull rectifier tube from amplifier, so it makes NO B+

Turn amp ON.

On 4 pin output tube socket, with Multi Meter set to AC volts, low scale, find the two consecutive pins that read 2.5 VAC. MARK those pins with a dot on the socket, etc.

It will read higher somewhat than 2.5 VAC, with the power trannie being totally unloaded.

Safe, easy, foolproof method, confirmed by meter under operating conditions.
