Don is retiring from the audio component building business...

Thanks for the update. Disappointing since I'm in AZ too.

Someone asked me if I'd be tempted to try new gear.... My answer to him was "no"..... At least for now.

I hope to still be using Don's gear 20 years from now.... Who knows what will happen during that time.

I do think Don's gear will skyrocket in price on the used market.

I have always meant to send my Philips CDC-935 to Don for modification. I became focused on analog though, and even more focused on motorcycles.

Sometimes one waits too long, and loses out. Here is a perfect example.

Oh well. The 935 is quite a good performer, even stock (thanks Todd!), so I'll have to settle for that. Who knows? Maybe I'll be able to find out what's causing my JVC 1050 issues, and squeeze a bit more life out of that.

Good luck to Don in his retirement!

I have had good mod service from PCX.
Quick turnaround and different level mods.
Just FYI.

Not that you got good service from Partsconnexion. They have a very good reputation for their mod service, and I've purchased parts from them many times.

What I'm surprised about is that you had them do the modifications, rather than doing them yourself. I follow you on the DIY Tube Asylum, so I figured it would be something you'd tackle yourself.

I figured that prior to sending the CD player to Don, I'd refresh the electrolytic caps, and perhaps upgrade the diodes and voltage regulator in the power supply. Don added a tube output stage to the player, and Todd always wrote how much he enjoyed the sound of his. As we both had good things to say regarding the JVC 1050, I assume I'd have liked the Don Allen mod too.

I wonder if he'd be willing to publish his schematic, now that he's not going to do them anymore?

This was many years ago and between
overtime at work and family problems
I didn't have the time to do it right.

Talk to PCX see what mods they do.

I'm really glad to have components from him; SET monos, line and phono stages and CDP. Fine and unique gear.

Kind of wish now I'd gotten one of Don's PP amps too. I agree that these will not lose value.
