Work, friends, family, garden... building my first amp and planning my second amp are taking up mucho time. Who knows, after building my amp/s I will have something to contribute.

I think it tends to get a little quieter here when our Northern Hemisphere friends emerge from their colder months... folks outside and all that.

But yes, it is quiet.

Cheers.

Could be. As the climate cools down in these parts, perhaps the opposite is true. Just got the fire on tonight for the first time this season.

(I wondered if we were witnessing the effects of the audiophile mantle migrating inexorably to headphone/dac forums? You know, fewer new people posting and so on?)

Yeah, maybe. Have not much thought about it. Hey, I am just about to join the SET ranks... seems like I could be the member of a dwindling minority! No problem with though... I have never been much of a "joiner".

Enjoy the cooler months - I wish I we had a wood heater here, even if we could use it only four weeks of the year here in Brisbane.

Keep well.

I think it's a sign of contentment. I see it over at AudioCircle on the Well Tempered Forum. A week might go by without a new post, but then someone posts and it comes alive again. If I had to guess, I'd say they're busy listening to music and content with their current systems. A lot of postings here(and there)are driven by people dissatisfied with their current system or a component within.

I like that sentiment. -t, posted on May 28, 2014 at 21:32:16

None in house at the moment but I'll always have room in my heart for SETs.

Best to you too!

I came to the end of the road with amps after about 30 years building. I found I liked the sound of the 4P1L more than all the other tubes I was using (26, 300b etc), found I could make a PSE amp with two stages of 4P1L, built it all in filament bias with Lundahl interstage and OPTs and that's it. Best amp I ever built.

Can't think of how to improve it so I just listen to it. I bought 150 of the 4P1L so got that covered. Drive it with a Mac Mini through a battery powered ES9023 DAC into Mark Audio Alpair 10s and there's nothing much I want to change. DACs will get better and I'll upgrade at some point, but I hardly have much to post about any more.

Don't know who else just ended up satisfied with what they have.

As I understand it ( & please correct me otherwise) most who use the 4P1L in their preamp use a digital source (approx 2V) but if using a phono source instead, things are not so great with the 4P1L and microphonics becomes a real problem. Is there a DHT-Pre capeable of say 12-15db gain better suited for a phono source instead? Like I said before please correct me if my statements are incorrect. Are DHT preamps better suited for digital sources ?

Cheers

The 4P1L gets microphonic at low signals - you have to take extra measures. I don't use vinyl so I'm not bothered. You can use the 26 in filament bias - that's pretty well behaved, but only mu of 9

There's an ingenious phono stage using the 3a5. Have a look. Very good apparently.

I have been put of SETs using DHTs like the 300B due to the current price gouging trend. That said, I have noted a growing contingent of builders using pentodes in place of 'ultra-priced' DHTs, and this may be more sustainable for a wider array of hobbyists and listeners.

Certainly seems more affordable...

4P1L is as cheap as it gets. That's one attraction. A couple are the equivalent of slightly more than a 2a3.

The alternative is high voltage transmitting tubes at low voltage. Low voltage 813 is a good equivalent to a 300b and a lot cheaper. More like it.

All used in triode.

You can get Chinese 300B's for about $45 each. That isn't all that unaffordable.

...have no issues of gain in my system. Please check my profile to see what tables, carts, and tonearm I have. My speakers are ~ 98-100 db though.

I see you have a 4Pi. My brother has one and I do not think you will have a problem with the type 26 unless your amp's input sensitivity to full output is so low.

The "stock" Shuguang is a fine tube. For an extra $200+ you get the same tube with a different (black) bottle and gold pins that doesn't sound very much different.

I'm jealous. That's a nice looking machine! But if I had the scratch right now, I'd likely sink it all into music anyway - or a boat...

Enjoy it!

I use a 26 linestage with a Gary Pimm 6ER5/6GK5 phono and love it.
