I'm curious about the Moth 2A3 and the big price drop. It used to be listed for over $3000 and now is on the website with a direct sale price of $1700 or so. Anyone know why the big price drop? Is this version different to the one that was reviewed and well received by the magazines.

Its the same version. originally, they set the price at $3K so they could sell direct and still set up a dealer network. That didn't pan out, so they went direct only, and lowered the price. Now there is an integrated version.

This version is integrated and has the rectifier outside the chassis.
Now you can use substitutes for the 5AR4's. The circuit is the same.

The price dropped because it is only sold direct. No dealer markup.

It is on my 'to do' list.

Having the recirifier outside is a smarter move-the older versions made it more difficult to swap the 5AR4s. OTOH, you really should use Mullards anyway, so there aren't alot of choices.

Jack,

You can use taller coke bottle GZ33's and GZ37's with the external version. These are both Mullard's. However, the GZ34 may be the better tube, you only need one and they last longer than a Tootsie Roll.

They aren't really direct replacements. FWIW, rectifiers last forever, but the sound *does* deteriorate. After a year of hard use, I swapped out the 5AR4s in my Cardinals, and noticed a real improvement in the treble. Stock up on your favorites.:-)
enjoy,
Jack

I do think Moth has discontinued their s2A3 and only sells it's new simplified integrated si2A3 now. However do try and ask if they will make one for you.

Happy Listening!

The integrated appears to have the same specs and the ability for 3
inputs.
