Any headbanging experiences lately...?

Don't ask me how I got it, but the last few weeks a CD-R with 4 new tracks by Rob Halford hardly left my CD-player. It's such great stuff! I'm shure you all know that Halford used to be that screaching bald guy (and gay) that fronted Judas Priest for about 20 years. He then went solo, released some experimental stuff. The great news is, he's is back on the old track: a double guitar attack, solid rhythm section, great tunes and a voice still as sharp as a razorblade. 'Made In Hell' is a personal song in which Halford sings about his youth in Birmingham: dreaming about a carreer in music as a way to escape working in the metal(!)industry - where most kids of his generation wound up sooner or later. My favorite tune so far is 'Silent Scream', that starts like a ballad, but builts up to a huge wall of sound. It's most gripping heavy metal I've heard in a very long time. 'Resurrection' will hit the streets on August 14th.
Anybody else have a head banging experience lately...?
Regards,
Robert

Last night I went to my favorite local CD shop to search out the Dead Can Dance recomendations you all gave me and I came across Aenima by Tool. I had only heard a couple of their songs in the past, but this stuff is great, don't know why it took me so long to pick up something by them. Otherwise, I've been listening to Empire by Queensryche, Times Making Changes--The best of Tesla and quite a bit of Type O Negative lately.
I never did get any of the DCD stuff, but did get the soundtrack to Princess Bride and an out of print disc by the eighties band Double, all used and all for the same price as one Popol Voh CD, SCORE!

C'mon, R, tell us - How did you get it?

Funny -

I banged my head to the action contained in British Steel the other day, as well as Hell Bent for Leather.

Live, JP were one of the best.

I'd love to hear this new Halford gig.

I'll take your advice, but if my wife finds out how much I have been spending on music in the last week, I'm blaming all of you!!!
5 trips to the store since Thursday (I rested on the Sabbath)each time leaving with no less than 3 discs, luckily, most were used, so I din't spend TOO much money.

I also picked up Def Leppard On Through The Night and Pyromania a couple of weeks ago. Never did care much for all of those 80's hair bands at the time but I always liked Def Leppard.

...but seriously, I think that spending too much on music is a general habit among the true music lovers. But hey, you only live once. And talking about Queensryche, I just heard about a 'Operation Mindcrime' reissued as a limited edition by the French Company Axe Killer. It's a miniature box set, also containing the debut 12" 'Queen Of The Ryche'. I just ordered it (there we go again - damn you Dave) and keep all you addicts posted about this gem.

It's getting late here. Midnight. Spin 'Priest In The East' by Judas Priest now, volume way past 11. Hope I don't keep the entire block awake. Ow well...

I grew up in the West Midlands in England, Stourbridge to be precise. I saw Priest a few times in my youth when Rob Halford had long hair and rather young. They played quite a few gigs in pubs and clubs around my home. I know it's predictable for people who have followed a band for years to prfer the earlier stuff but i honestly believe Sad Wings Of Destiny, their second album to be far better than anything they did after. Killing Machine and British Steel were great albums but still not as good. I gave up after Screaming For Vengeance. Either they were getting heavier and faster or i was getting older. Genocide, Islands Of Domination,Victim Of Changes, Ripper etc. My god, what an album!!

See ya

Dead Can Dance, so whichs ones did you wind up with? I'd say get all of them save for Spirit Chaser.

If you like Tool, you may like their Opiate mini album - 5 or six songs of pure anger!!! Never did like the Undertow album, every song sounded the same.

Enjoy those D.C.D.'s!!

If your an Iron Maiden fan check out their newest record. They have Bruce Dickenson and Adrian Smith back (they also kept Janik Gers also, so now have three guitar players!). Being a hardcore Maiden fan back in my high school days, and also being pretty dissapointed with any of their releases after '88, I will say that Brave New World (the title of their new one) is on par with Somewhere In Time era Maiden and far supasses any material they have released after Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Can't wait to see them with Queensrych and Rob Halford at a sold out MSG!

Hi TFD,

Axe Killer label also put out Virgin Killer and In trance and, as a bonus, the whole Fly to the Rainbow divided between the two CDs. The best Scorpions albums all remastered!! If you like early Scorpions don´t miss it.

I also saw the Queensryche that you´ve mentioned, but I´ve never heard the band so I passed. Aren´t they to much posers? In fact, their look is what is keeping me way from their records! Anyway, after all these good reviews about Queensryche and Empire, here and at AR, I´ll probably give it a try. Where should I start?

Regards
Wladimir

Yeah, you're right, Queensryche had big hair and wore make up back then. But hey, which rock band didn't in those dreadfull 80's and early 90's? It didn't keep Queensryche from making a few outstanding albums. There are two options:
'Operation Mindcrime', a clever concept album, sounding like a high tech mix between Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Rush and - in the ballads - Pink Floyd.
My dear friend from Atlanta, that I hold responsible for my alarming cashflow (yeah Dave G.) pointed me to the DCC remaster of 'Empire'. I like this one even better that 'Operation' - better songs, better production.
Never heard of this bunch, eh. Man, you're gonna jump from joy! Let us know if you went for.
Hope this helps,

I agree. The new Maiden album is great. Best since their Seventh Son... release.

However, Bruce's last two solo albums, Chemical Wedding and Accident of Birth put most of the Maiden stuff to shame.

****However, Bruce's last two solo albums, Chemical Wedding and Accident of Birth put most of the Maiden stuff to shame.****

While I will agree that Bruce's Accedent Of Birth and Chemical Wedding are good records (as well as the rest of his solo works) I can honestly say that NONE of his solo albums can compare to the classic era Maiden (ie: Killers-Seventh Son of a Seventh Son) to my ears. I even think Brave New World is better than his solo work, also. Don't get me wrong, I like Dickenson's solo records, just not as much as good Maiden. (good Maiden = everything they have done except No Prayer for The Dying, Fear of The Dark, X Factor, and Viurtual IX)

Sorry to step in, but does any of you guys like Samson - the Bruce Bruce (Dickinsin) era? I still like Shock Tactics and Head On (Vice Versa!) quite a lot. Both albums, and the live 'At Reading '81' have been reissued few months back on Sanctuary. I also know that Bruce Dickinson will do some kind of reunion tour this or next year.
Enjoy,
Robert

I like Maiden too, but from a musical perspective, his solo stuff is much better written. Most of the old Maiden tunes, and even some of them on the new album, are just basic I IV V I chord progressions. You learn that your first month in any music theory class. I still enjoy listening to it, but the second I start analyzing Iron Maiden, it gets boring.

Just my opinion, as everything else on this forum. ;-)

****I like Maiden too, but from a musical perspective, his solo stuff is much better written.****

Not for me. Maiden has much more interesting writting and arranging. Much more melody and harmony. I like this.

****Most of the old Maiden tunes, and even some of them on the new album, are just basic I IV V I chord progressions.****

So is Accedent and Chemical, except Accedent and Chemical sans the cool arranging and guitar harmony.

****You learn that your first month in any music theory class.****

Oh, I see. You are trying to prove your supereority by being condesending by ASSUMING I know nothing about music therory. Get off your high horse, you don't need therory to have an ear. I have met SO MANY schooled musicians that couldn't play their way out of a paper bag!

****I still enjoy listening to it, but the second I start analyzing Iron Maiden, it gets boring.****

Try analyzing AOB and CW. Its pretty much cookie cutter formula metal with some ripping guitar solos (sloppy, but ripping all the same) compliments of Roy Z.

****Just my opinion, as everything else on this forum. ;-)
Robert****

Just IMHO as well, but with out the attitude.

...just kidding guys. My favorite albums are Number Of The Beast and Piece Of Mind, and while Maiden got stuck with that Bayley dude, Dickinson made some very welcome (and well sung) albums.
About 'analyzing' albums. As far as I know there are two ways to listen to music:

- just enjoyng the tunes (that's what I do most of the time)
- or, analyzing the stuff with the ears of a schooled musician.

I don't think that one is better than the other. It's my experience though that it's quite easy to analyse some popmusic to death, because in the strict musical sence it's not always that interesting. But if the tunes are cool, who gives a damn.
On the other hand, one of my friends who studies guitar, managed to explain to me - using all kind of technical details - that some country and folk is much more interesting than it seems. So having some kind of education can be very helpful sometimes.

Just my 2c.

Respectfully,
Robert

Back to music: Queensryche, it's probably also a good idea to check out the brand new 'Greatest Hits' compilation by Queensryche. It offers a nice selection of all albums that the boys from Seattle released so far and could be a good starting point.
Hope this helps,

Listen to Number of the Beast and tell me that almost progression (or at least the bass line) isn't the same. You are incorrect about the boring arrangements on Chemical Wedding. They are quite different than most Maiden material.

...eventhough ALL their records except Here in The Now Frontier and Q2K are excellent. If you like Empire better than Mindcrime I would reccomend Promised Land as your next QR purchas. If you prefer Mindcrime over Empire I would go in the direction of Rage For Order. The first EP and The Warning are more traditional sounding metal, but excellent nonetheless. Might want to wait untill you are hardcore fan for these (unless old '80s prog metal is your thing). I can wholeheartedly NOT reccomend Here In The Now Fronitier and Q2K. YMMV.

Compared to Big Pete's earlier band ( Carnivore ), Type O Negative is pretty lame and "girly". While they do have a few cuts that do get down and jam on their first two discs ( "Slow, Deep & Hard" and "The Origin of the Feces") , i will guarantee that Pete has been very "snapper" oriented for the last few years ( can't really blame him though ). His musical stylings reflect that in abundance also. You should see the chicks he picks up !!! While i haven't talked to him in a few years, he's probably the same guy that he was back then, just getting laid way more often : )

Have they put out anything since "World Coming Down" or is that still their latest ? Sean

I just got into them about 2-3 years ago, and come from a punk/gothic background so the newer stuff suits me well. I picked up Slow, Deep and Hard and couldn't get into it, maybe 15-20 years ago I would've liked it more. I'm amazed at how people bag on their newer stuff (From Bloody Kisses on) but I guess compared to the first couple of albums there's quite a difference. As far as I know World Comong Down is the last thing they did
