 30 years ago, as the days got shorter, the late afternoon skies turned yellow-orange, and here in San Francisco, there was no rain in sight. After school one Friday, I walked across the courtyard. Some kids had a boombox, and we heard some FM station play A-Ha's new song, "Cry Wolf." The misty recording and cool synths intensified the mood. Two girls, a guy, and I then took the northbound 28 bus. We ended up at a small record store (Wherehouse?) somewhere near 7th & Judah. There wasn't a single vinyl record. The walls had cassettes, while the racks in the middle of the floor had CDs. One of the girls bought A-Ha's Scoundrel Days on cassette. We did not know that the cover art was Maui's Haleakala. We had mistakenly assumed it was from A-Ha's native Scandinavia. Anyway, the lead title track showed us that A-Ha were so much more than just "Take On Me." "Scoundrel Days" had those top-notch 80s synths, and Morten Harket's soaring vocals. For 30 years now, good DJs play artists' juicy alternate cuts, such as "Scoundrel Days." And when you, as an audiophile, play it for guests or customers, you're the coolest gal/guy in the house! -Lummy The Loch Monster
