I just read Joel Selvin's "Altamont, the Rolling Stones, the Hell's Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock's Darkest Day." Fascinating story about the events leading up to and on the day of the concert. I realized it was such a downer subject that I'd pretty much put it out of my mind for years, but I'm glad I read it.

...he was the rock music writer for the SF Chronicle for many years - he's been interviewed here locally about the book in the newspaper and on the radio.

Selvin says the Hells Angel who killed that guy should have been hailed a hero because the guy pulled out a gun - so he saved many lives.

Fascinating.

Have you seen the documentary? I thought the did a decent job with the rangeling to get a spot to perform before, and the events during.

I saw it years ago, so I don't remember it well. Selvin was pretty cynical about the movie and more so about Jagger's involvement. I've returned it to the library, so I can't check my memory, but it was an interesting book about a terrible event and its planning, or lack of.

Same for me. The concert was originally planned to be in a San Francisco park. That was turned down and they scrambled to find a alternative in the general vicinity. I think Melvin Belli was their attorney working the deals? Was Chip Monk involved? Don't remembered who hired the Angels. They call it the day that ended the love and peace movement.
