30 years ago, during my sophomore year of high school, we talked about audio reproduction. As teenagers, none of us was an audiophile. Yet, we knew that even the best audio products could not capture, for example, the sound of a simple conversation between ourselves. Therefore, one of my friends in homeroom, Andy, shook his head side to side, and wistfully said, "It's all about the fantasy..."

During winter break '86, Andy, Theresa, and I met at another friend's house, in San Francisco's Inner Richmond District. The dad rounded us up, packed some refreshments, told us to get into the Volvo station wagon (so S.F.!), and drove through the Presidio. We were going to take a ride to Pt. Reyes. When we got to the Marin side, we heard some radio station play Luther Vandross' "Stop To Love."

I don't know what got over the four of us high school kids, but we just joyfully broke out, singin' and struttin' to "Stop To Love." Hmmm, let's see...we four kids included Vietnamese, Jewish, Hispanic, German, French, Filipino, Chinese, and some sort of British ethnicities. None of us was African American. Goodness gracious, with our stilted and disjointed dance moves, lousy singing, we had no rhythm or soul. Yeesh.

But that's the thing. As Andy said, it's all about the fantasy. Whether we are male or female, old or young, gay or straight, pink or blue, "Stop To Love," in a fun way, reminds us to boogie, enjoy each other's company, and have a good time.
