For decades now, this small trickle of audiophiles has approached me with the sheepish, "I feel guilty for listening to Freestyle." WTF?! Why can't you just be like everybody else, and experience the unbridled joy that is Freestyle? I don't know about your necks of the woods, but here in San Francisco middle and high schools, at the end of 1988, while I was a high school senior, Cynthia's "Change On Me" became a staple. But it wasn't universally loved. Many of the "couldn't-be-bothered" senior girls looked with disdain upon the freshmen and sophomore girls, who were energetically dancing to "Change On Me." Heck, those senior girls even looked down on the boys we now know were/are gay. *Shrugs* What can I say? Those senior girls were just jealous. Look; I had no dancing ability. But "Change On Me" was so infectious, I got out there with my underclassmen friends, and enthusiastically flailed around. True, when you play "Change On Me" for grumpy audiophiles, they may initially be reluctant and reticent. But they come around, and it must give you exceeding satisfaction, to see the 'philes start to enjoy themselves. Anyway, several of my fellow senior girls asked me to the prom. They were miffed, to learn that I already had a freshman and several sophomores lined up. Like the Freestyle we danced to, these underclassmen girls were prettier, happier, faster, more energetic and positive. Hey, whether you're an audiophile who was around in Freestyle's 80s birth, or today's universal appeal, the Freestyle Explosion Concert is coming to San Jose's SAP Center on Friday, July 22. Hope to see you there! -Lummy The Loch Monster |
