As a small child at the end of the 70s, I heard Billy Joel's "Honesty" a few times, mostly at night, and probably via San Francisco's lite rock station, KOIT. "Honesty" was from the 52nd Street album, whose "Big Shot" and "My Life" never went off the air. Yet, once the calendar turned to 1980, I did not really hear "Honesty" air any more. I think it was the summer of 1981. I was coming down the escalator near Ala Moana shopping center's Centerstage [photo above taken last week]. Back then, it was dark and brown. A darker-skinned girl, probably no older than a high school freshman, was singing Joel's "Honesty," a cappella. I thought it was interesting that a girl was singing this song. In the 21st century, I've gone to several Billy Joel concerts, as he's come out west. At least at those shows, he did not perform "Honesty." Fortunately, radio stations have been rediscovering "Honesty." We audiophiles have known about it. But as more and more millennials learn about it, that's gratifying. -Lummy The Loch Monster |
