When I was in college in the early-90s, UC Santa Cruz was flooded with wannabe hippies. They liked their folk-rock, which wasn't conducive to parties. Moreover, I was located a Crown, which was situated atop the hill, in the trees. That environment brought out all of the wannabe hippies.

I had a few friends/classmates from urban L.A. One February or March evening, we were eating dinner in the Crown dining hall. One of them said, "Yo Lummy, nothing's going on here. Let's go."

"Go where?" I asked.

"C'mon, I'll show you," he said.

We didn't even bother to get dressed.

You see, in those days, the school thought it was doing everyone a favor, by housing the minorities [the school was predominantly Caucasian] out at Oakes.

So my friend brought us out to his Korean-American girlfriend's Oakes dorm room. She gathered some of her friends, and then we went to this dance.

Bam! Whoa! The DJ was spinning not the crappy wannabe hippie folk rock, but Freestyle! In addition, the percentage of wannabe hippies was less. I finally saw modern-looking kids, including and as well as, Hispanics, south Asians, and African Americans.

Hot freakin' damn! When Lisette Melendez's infectious "Together Forever" played, it didn't matter if you were alone or with a group. It didn't matter if your boyfriend or girlfriend was there. It didn't matter who was or were next to you. It didn't matter if you could dance. You just flailed around, ran in circles, busted out moves you didn't know you had. Better yet, you did all that, along with whoever was next to you.

I temporarily lost my friends in the crowd, but a hot Latina gravitated towards me, and.....WOW.

Audiophiles need frenetic dance music, like "Together Forever." I don't know about your locale, but here in the Bay Area, "Together Forever" is still a party favorite, still proudly heard on the (usually internet) radio.

Back to that Winter '91 dance out at Oakes. About half an hour after "Together Forever" came to an end, one of the rare slow songs played. My friend and his Korean-American girlfriend were making out. And the rest of us didn't see him again, until econ class on Monday :-)
