Radio stations do play a smattering of songs by The Fixx, but they seldom play "Secret Separation." The first time I heard that song was on the radio, via Walkman. It had to have been Friday, May 30, 1986. Several of my friends (we were freshmen) hung out at San Francisco's Stonestown after school. Back then, it wasn't the commercial metropolis it is now. It was a sleepy, open-air affair, with most buildings being no taller than 2 stories. Anyway, one by one, my friends dispersed. I think I was with Andy and one other guy, outside of Emporium, facing 19th Avenue. Man, when we heard "Secret Separation," it was as though that part of our youth would go on forever...

Okay, it must have been Saturday, June 7, 1986, when several of my friends wanted to get together, to play some softball, football, and/or basketball. I met at my friend Jenny's house, out on 47th Avenue, closer to Irving, than Judah. Even in the mid-morning, it was sunny and warm, quite unusual for that part of town. As Jenny and I gathered some sporting goods, and walked out her front door, a neighbor, looking like a Harley driver, across the street, was sitting on a chair in his open-door garage. I guess he had a boombox. Maybe it was tuned to KFOG. But Jenny and I overheard GTR's "When The Heart Rules The Mind," and then The Fixx's "Secret Separation."

8 or 9 of us met in Golden Gate Park. While fielding softballs we were hitting, the heat wore us out. At least Jenny was wearing shorts and a red tank top. Many of the others were in long pants and long sleeves. I don't think we lasted an hour. In those days, we didn't stock up on drinks. We split up, thinking that, if it was this hot out by the beach, it must have been triple digits inland.

Another friend (I think her name was Fanny) and I accompanied Jenny back out. Fanny peeled off around 45th avenue, and I continued with Jenny to her house. Man, that 2-story house must now be worth $1.6m. But anyway, after putting away the mitts and balls, Jenny led me upstairs. On an open rack, she had a bunch of pre-recorded cassettes. Obviously, as a music lover, I couldn't help, but check out Jenny's tapes.

There was a bathroom next to her bedroom. I was washing my hands, arms, and face in the sink. Standing between me and the toilet, Jenny reached into her tank top, pulled out her white bra, and tossed it into a hamper. Since I was washing my face, I didn't have my glasses on (I've always had poor eyesight). But Jenny pulled her shorts away from her waist, reached down, pulled out her dimpled pad, and pretended to swipe me with it. I was too blind, numb, and tired to move, so Jenny grazed my shoulder with her bloody pad. She did an "Oops," and covered her mouth with her other hand. Not to worry; my t-shirt was light blue, and no blood got on it or my arm.

Downstairs in the kitchen, boy, cold lemonade never felt so good! We could barely lift ourselves up, and hobble over to the adjacent living room.

In said living room, Jenny's family had one of those single-rack "tower" stereo systems. And wouldn't you know it, within a few songs on some radio station, The Fixx's "Secret Separation" came on!

Shortly thereafter, I left for Honolulu. There that summer, I probably heard "Secret Separation" no more than 5 times. And most of those were probably from Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40 show.

Needless to say, as an audiophile, I need products to preserve the vibe of "Secret Separation." It must make me feel like it's May/June 1986 all over again. But beyond that, just enjoy the song. Add it to the other Fixx songs you listen to.
