Isn't today Dylan's 75th birthday? Seems odd nobody mentioned it. Here in Tampa WMNF has been celebrating all day. Happy birthday Bobby D.

GREAT albums on a list and you'd need to shuffle 'em around a bit deciding which order of
greatness they should or could be in.

Mostly the order they are in is sufficient to my tastes but that can vary from year to year.

Happy Birthday to a living legend, a true artist, and a GREAT song and dance man!

and so many essential, too. Reminding me I haven't played Oh Mercy in quite a while. That'll be this evening's spin - after a day of fishing.

I am not a big enough Dylan fan to know how accurate this list is. I was a teenager when he started recording. I was to immature to get into the words and thought his singing sucked. Didn't jump aboard until Nashville skyline. I have seen him live a few times. The best was a reunion with the Band.

Similar to what Mike B. said, I too was late to the Dylan party. When I was in high school and collage I was into The Beatles, Stones, Deep Purple, etc. Dylan was too "folk rock" for me, and although I enjoyed his greatest hits, I simply did not understand how people could deal with his voice.

In 1986, I bought a cassette tape of Nashville Skyline while at bike week in Florida, and listened to it on the way back to snowy NY. Hmm, not bad. But it wasn't until Tangled Up In Blue from Blood On The Tracks that I really got Dylan, and began to delve deeper into his earlier work.

but IMO you have to rank "Bringing It All Back Home" and "Oh Mercy" a little higher. Almost every song on "BIABH" is "essential" and OM (also) contains "Dignity"...gotta be "essential".

Ditto, but moreso with his other early works "The Times They Are a-Changin'" and "Bob Dylan". Groundbreaking in their day, and inspired rockers Beatles, Stones, etc. who in turn influenced BD.

You've right of course. I would have to switch #1 & #2...for the reason's you sited. And really, everything changed after "Bring it all Back Home" was released. So...an interesting/fun exercise but impossible to try and rank them...IMO.
