The System, "Don't Disturb This Groove"

Spring break 1987. My family drove from S.F. to L.A. When we got there, it was a record-setting 100 degrees. When we entered the theme parks, we didn't want to stand in line for the rides. We just wanted to go to the water attractions. And that's when The System's "Don't Disturb This Groove" made us, at least temporarily, set aside the grumbling about the heat. And if the blazing sun didn't blind you, you could have been staring at all the swimwear-clad girls. When my family got back to the motel, we couldn't wait to turn up the air conditioning. My brother turned on the TV, changed the channel to MTV, and saw the video for "Don't Disturb This Groove." Set in an arid motel, the video went hand-in-hand with our spring break vacation. When we met up with relatives, we went shopping and out to eat. I couldn't help but notice that many of the electronics stores were pushing the new-fangled CD players. And when we passed by L.A. record stores, we were overjoyed that they stocked actual CDs. I did indeed see many copies of The System's CD, Don't Disturb This Groove. Eh, but I think more people were buying the Jody Watley album :-) Anyway, "Don't Disturb This Groove" is just one of those timeless, enjoyable, groovy blends of synthpop and R&B. Given that California's weather is now perennially hot and dry, "Don't Disturb This Groove" has become ingrained, woven into the fabric of CA life. -Lummy The Loch Monster
