Friends from MA, my wife, and I trekked to the tiny White Mountain Region hamlet of Bethlehem,NH last night to see Richard Thompson, solo and acoustic, at a nice little (ca. 300 seat) venue called the Colonial Theater "in the heart of Bethlehem's theater district". :-)

While I am kind of embarrassed to say I've never seen him before, I will tell you all now that he was absolutely excellent. It was a fun and entertaining show -- somehow I expected that he might be more formal and taciturn. He certainly seemed relaxed and funny; seemed like he was having fun (and/or he has his schtick down pat).

Second row seats right in front of the stage, on his right side (so we could watch him play). The sound was even good.

Nice way to spend a Thursday night & well worth the hour-and-a-half drive from our house. (We had a nice dinner, too, at an Italian-esque restaurant in the town with an oddly Mexican-sounding moniker!)

PS -- One of the things I really enjoy about living in New England is the opportunity to see world-class talent in relaxed settings like this one (the Colonial Theater, for those suitably interested). No dearth of such venues up this-a-way in any number of nice little NE towns, for anyone willing to drive a bit.

all the best,
mrh

produced by Jeff Tweedy....out soon. I think I have seen him in various configurations about 20 times. Solo, as well as with Shawn Colvin and Christine Collister and Clive Gregson, a powerful and mesmerizing band. Saw him & Linda in LA during the marriage break up tour (for Shoot Out The Lights) when they literally were throwing things at each other on stage.
Most of the shows were solo and he is a real funny fellow. In Capitola, CA Taj Mahal invited me back stage and as we were smoking Cuban cigars RT stopped by and Taj invited him to join us.....he lit up and was tuning his guitar and Taj asked him to lay a tune on us and so he did. Then...once again, pure magic happened as they both sang while RT played and they did a couple of Joseph Spence songs singing together. Taj has played JS for years...then to blow all 3 of our minds they did the Beach Boy's arrangement of Sloop John B.
stupefied is what I was...

They sounded good to me.

My apologies for over-mentioning the name of the venue in my original post; I am not shilling for the place (although I certainly enjoyed being there!); an inadvertently (non) edited cut and paste led to two mentions of the theater by name (and a link) :-P

all the best,
mrh

... the Richard and Linda band about 73/74 which could stretch out into a state beyond song beyond time it seemed.
