Jerry Santos with Hoku Zuttermeister one of the finest slack key songs of all time. It makes my wife cry a little...

Composed by Robert Beaumont & Jerry Santos collectively known as Olomana. Ku'u Home O' Kahalu'u

I remember days when we were younger
We used to catch o'opu in the mountain stream
'Round the Ko'olau hills we'd ride on horseback
So long ago it seems it was a dream
Last night I dreamt I was returning and my heart called out to you
But I fear you won't be like I left you....Me ke aloha Ku'u Home o 'Kahalu'u

I remember days when we were wiser
When our world was small enough for dreams
And you have lingered there my sister and I no longer can it seems
Last night I dreamt I was returning and my heart called out to you
But I fear I am not as I left you.........Me ke aloha Ku'u Home O' Kahalu'u

Change is a strange it can not be denied
It can help you find yourself or make you lose your pride
Moved with it slowly as on the road you go
Please do not hold on to me, we all must go alone............

I remember days when we were smiling
When we laughed and sang the whole night long
And I will greet you as I find you
With the sharing of a brand new song
Last night I dreamt I was returning and my heart called out to you
To please accept me as you find me..........
Me ke aloha Ku'u Home O' Kahalu'u
Me ke aloha Ku'u Home O' Kahalu'u
Me ke aloha Ku'u Home O' Kahalu'u

I actually saw Jerry Santos perform this in the early 2000s, when he played regularly at Chai's Island Bistro, then located at the entrance of Aloha Tower.

Also at Chai's, I saw on several occasions, Hapa and Keli'i Kaneali'i perform the shorter version.

Several Hapa songs, including the short version of "Ku'u Home O Kahalu'u," were played at my wedding banquet.

still played alot here, after nearly 30 years. We saw Santos very often when we lived in Haleiwa and Olamana was a hot local band. Also saw Gabby Pahinui and got to know him pretty well. This was around the time Ry Cooder showed up and recorded a great album with Gabby.
Good stuff, all of it.

My parents had Olomana's eponymous album and And So We Are on LP. Alas, both sounded terrible.

As a solo performer, Jerry Santos surprised us with his sense of humor.

As far as "contemporary" Hawaiian music goes, it was Keola & Kapono Beamer's "Honolulu City Lights," which put it on the map. I remember spending those awesome days at Castle Park [don't laugh too hard at the photo of us at Castle Park], which had a water slide, arcade, go-cart racers, bating cage, miniature golf, and arcade. Exhausted at the end of the day, my cousins would load into the car. There was nothing like hearing "Honolulu City Nights" come on the radio.
