Once again BLASTING Santana III (Legacy Edition) and marveling how fantastic that band was. You frequently see Carlito rightly mentioned as a favorite guitarist and the first three Santana recordings are on most everybody's Top-fill-in-the-blank Lists (I'll always place Caravanserai before them though) yet I've NEVER thought of Greg Rolie as a favored vocalist, nor seen him much mentioned as such anywhere. There's more kudos for his B-3 work than his singing it seems. His vocals and style are imperative to the sound of Santana, (even though they had many "BETTER" vocalists through the decades) and this paradox doesn't seem to fit into the "measure" of other bands, especially from this time frame and where the lead singer was usually spotlighted. Isn't like he was the only lead singer stuck behind a keyboard, either... "Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination"-Michael McClure |
