Mickey by Toni Basil? You know that kind of annoying song with the cheerleaders in the video? Oh Mickey your so fine........... OK I'll stop. Here is the video to refresh your memory. But I bet you don't know who is playing guitar.

So regardless of what you think of the song Toni is pretty cool. Her mom was a vaudeville dancer, she was a choreographer on the TAMI Show in 64, she had roles in Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces and here choreography credits include Bowie's Diamond Dogs tour and plenty of movies you've seen.

So anyway back to the question. It's none other than John Goodsall. He was the Brand X guitarist so it seems an odd marriage but maybe not. Here are a couple examples of Johns great playing.

And this from the later three piece version in the 90's. Go to 35:54 elapsed time for what I consider the best tune on the album.

Yep, John Goodsall. Was he really that far-fetched to be playing a 'pop' tune?

I hear keyboard work. As instruments go. Guitar is mostly rhythm work.

Yeah, that Farfisa is the most interesting aspect of the song..., posted on October 11, 2014 at 15:56:43

a song I have always despised and heard again just now trying to remember if there was any distinguishing
guitar part or work which there isn't. Song sounds like it could have been performed by the Knack.

The gams are the most interesting part of the video.

I'm showing my age, but for 32 years, I have had Toni Basil's version of "Mickey" on myriad vinyl, cassette, and CDs. They vary in sound quality. Perhaps the sharpest-sounding is the track found on EMI Records' Living In Oblivion series, "Volume Two" (0777 7 89605 2 2). It's this sample* I bring with me, when I audition audio gear.

This proves that the original recording is excellent: focused, punchy, spirited. The drums and synthesizers drive the rhythm, but you can clearly hear the electric guitar midway up (height-wise) the soundstage.

I no longer have the album, Word Of Mouth, so I'm not sure who exactly plays on "Mickey," which was a Mike Chapman/Nicky Chinn composition. It was originally written for a (heterosexual) man to sing. So, the female Toni Basil had to change the name and gender.

The album contains three Devo covers. In fact, members of Devo perform on those songs.

Personally, I love "Mickey's" synthesizers, which, on a good system, will make it seem like you're at a beach boardwalk. But today, "Mickey" has found a new audience; it is very popular among schoolchildren.

As audiophiles, we know that if a product can't sort out the excellent "Mickey," said product sure as hell won't be able to sort out the San Francisco Symphony playing at Davies Hall.

* On that Living In Oblivion CD, which you can find cheaply on the 'net, the last track is the hard-to-find Spanish version of "Mickey."

Probably just a thing where he and Toni were dating is my guess. That and she was just pretty cool.

There's a good version of "My Little Red Book" by Basil too.
