 I remember it well. On Saturday, June 7, 1986, I went over to my friend's house, way out on Irving & 47th Avenue in San Francisco. It was one of the those rare days, where the weather was warm and sunny, not foggy, cool, and windy. Across 47th Avenue, a neighbor opened his garage door. The garage was chock full of junk. The guy, probably in his early 40s, sat on a fold-up chair. To his side on a small wooden side table was a boombox. He fiddled with the radio, until he came to KFOG. After some Pretenders, on came GTR's amazing "When The Heart Rules The Mind." My friend was tugging on me, impatiently waiting for me to go with him to play ball in Golden Gate Park. But I wanted to hear the song 'til its end. Funny thing was, KFOG immediately followed that up with The Fixx's "Secret Separation," which stopped both me and my friend dead in our tracks. Man, with the sunny and warm weather, we just wanted this to go on forever... I spent the summer of '86 with my family in Honolulu. We were driving on S. King, past McKinley High School (my paternal grandmother's alma mater), when we heard GTR's "When The Heart Rules The Mind" come on the car radio. Magic. I think I bought the GTR cassette from GEM(?), out near Salt Lake. Later that summer, I picked up GTR on vinyl (it may have been a Japanese pressing) from the Ala Moana Shirokiya. Both the cassette and LP suffered from terrible sonics. In April '87, I used my holidays and birthday monies to buy a Sony CDP-520ESII CD player. I then ran out and bought GTR on CD from some record store in Serramonte. Sigh, that original Arista CD still sounded thin, grain, and, well, digital. I now have GTR on so-called "K2HD-HQCD" [above, shown next to the June 1986 issue of Stereophile]. According to the sticker, this version was (re)released on March 28, 2012. It's supposedly remastered, using JVC's K2 process. Out of all the formats, this HQCD is the least offensive-sounding. It's not as grainy, and you can, for once, hear Phil Spalding's bass. Unless and until we hear the original master tapes, we can only assume that Geoff Downes did a horrible job, originally recording and producing this album. -Lummy The Loch Monster

Nice Lummy! I, too, miss those Sony ES cd players. What is your current disc spinner?
