got a chance to compare the CD and the 24/96 Hi Zoot version back to back and using my headphone set up. It ain't just a little better, it is magnitudes better. First of all the background is like a shark's eye, dead black and the sound leaps from it with amazing leading edges of the notes. Mark's vocals are more chesty and the overtones in his voice more pronounced./ It is...what's the word...clarity, there is more clarity.
This is the first 24/96 on my system and I am sold.....

first time Dire Straits came to San Francisco. Played a small club called the Old Waldorf and he asked me for my Russian Wolf skin hat and he wore it for the whole set. Afterwards he came and bought us drinks. He was a nice fellow and he gave my hat back too!!
And he does sound good on a cassette too!

...sounded ok.

I just didn't care much for the music - only one song made my iTunes.

The DVD-A of Knoffler's Sailing to Philadelphia is really good too. Terrific songs and great sonics. The disc is 24/96 or 24/48 - I can't recall at the moment but it sounds notably better than the 16/44.1 CD. Highly recommended.

I think it was 24/48 and exceptionally better than the plain CD.

"Sailing To Phila." and "ShangriLa". Both available on DVD-A and both sound fantastic in that hi-res format....

Hi Larry - glad to hear a strong endorsement for some hi-rez music. Drives me nuts to read reports of (strongly) suspected up-sampled CD data being sold as hi-rez. Jeesh, if you're going to sell me something for the nth time (at a premium price to boot), at least give me the goods! I like Privateering and I'm happy to hear it has been genuinely issued in hi-rez.

Just curious, what is the complete playback chain you are using for CD and the hi-rez music? Especially interested in the DAC being used for each source.

Thanks.

I use a McIntosh SACD/CD player and use digital outs into my Yulong DA8 DAC for the CDs. SACD out thru the McIntosh of course. For the HD connected to my Mac Pro I use Squeezebox Touch into the same Yulong and into the VTL Pre-Amp or the Yulong's headphone amp in to my Sennheisser HD-600 cans.
The Yulong is a way better DAC than the one in the McIntosh.
The VTL feeds 2 BEL 1001 amps, each bridged into a monoblock with 200watts a side into the Nelson Reed 804C speakers which were custom built for me by Bill Reed and are highly modified from the standard 804's.
There is also a REL subwoofer in play.

Thanks for replying, I'm sorry not to be back in touch - I became overwhelmed with work issues, needed to travel to the U.K., ... and lost touch with the truly important stuff - like listening & enjoying (and thanking people who are nice enough to answer my questions!) :-) Now about to begin a camping vacation with friends, one of my favorite times of the whole year.

Anyhow, *nice* chain. While everything is important, I've come to learn how big a difference the DAC makes - and great ones are becoming much more affordable. I am still using the original Bryston DAC (version 1), and I do love it. But it doesn't support DSD. For a computer geek and music lover, I am using very little computer-based audio - and I should do much more - before very long we all will. I love playing with this stuff - but finding the time to do it has been a challenge.

I'm also enjoying the vinyl renaissance, always kept my Linn in service. But as genuine high-quality, high-res files become more available, with really good DACs at reasonable prices ... no question that is the future of mainline audio.

So much music, so little time ...

Thanks again & sorry for the long delayed response!

it was like being a teenager all over. Music discovery time just exploded and I had time to really hear and improve the system and the DAC was the key after all the ripping was done. DacMagic was super, for a few years now the Yulong just zooms past it in all aspects of sound.
A great time to get to the soul of music with the resolution we have at hand for a song.
