a bar that was a 15 minute walk from where we lived. That was where Sly was the house band and where the record company spotted them. I'd say this was about 1965...I think. My friend and I went there damn near any Friday or Saturday night that we were not going to SF to see bands...He sure had a great band, I enjoyed dancing to his music...

Larry, I was trying to keep things going here while you were away. No luck.
I am not sure if I ever saw them live? They did produce a lot of danceable music.

one of the first mixed race rock bands too, I think, at least in that day and age.

upon further reflection I think the bar was called The Embers while Sly had his time there, then it was sold and became WC...
Eventually it became a christian bookstore.

Your mention of mixed race bands made me think of my friend Tom Lockard. Tom passed on about 5 years ago at 87. He was in the Navy or Merchant Marines during WWII. I am not sure which. He, and another white guy formed a group with two black guys on the ship and learned to sing together. When the war was over, they performed professionally in and around New York City. They became regulars on the Arthur Godfrey show. There were many racial barriers they encountered.

singing with Albert King at age 14 (1958) and then as an Ikette with Ike & Tina at 15 (1959. That little white girl had her some lungs!

I am glad you reminded me of Bonnie. I just pulled two albums to listen to tomorrow. Probably been twenty years. Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, and To Bonnie from Delaney

Can't top that. I had never heard of him and a friend at college told me about this amazing new album. Almost twisted my arm to come listen to it. We drove over to his house. He lived with his parents and they were not home. He put it on a big council stereo. At first it seems foreign to me, but it was a live recording and he just kept going. Soon we were both moving to the music. That was around 1964-65
