I'm a big time Mermen fan, Jim Thomas is an awesome guitarist. While listening to my Mermen channel on Pandora, this group DaiKaiJu came on - WHOA! These guys are *good*, really good.

Check out the YouTube linky below. If you like spacy surf rock, these guys will certainly please you...

Think bass line, scratch guitar. Here's a surf treat:

Big mermen fan for at least 15 years. Food For Other Fish is the greatest album I've ever heard, and I've believed that for a long time. Unfortunately I live in the heartland and have only seen them live twice. I probably have 250-300 surf/instro rock CDs - I love the Mermen, Insect Surfers, Slacktone, Davie Allan, Surf Coasters, Laika and the Cosmonauts, Los Straitjackets, Dick Dale, well, you get the idea. Rock on.

If you'd like to hear what the Mermen do live in concert, go to Archive.org and do a search for "Mermen". Many of their shows are available for free download (Ogg, MP3, and Lossless!) from the Archive

Below is a link to a fantastic show featuring Jim Thomas and Randy Clark on guitars. Randy also fronts a band called Crowsong, highly recommended...

There's a few songs from a 1995 TV performance on youtube that are very nice, but any of the 90s records are first rate, especially Ecim and China Gate.

BTW, if you do like the sound, their Ecim debut from 1991 is highly recommended. But look for the hard-to-find original CD or LP release on Capella (not to be confused with the later expanded CD remaster in 2006 on Strange Attractors that is much, much more compressed, but it does have the bonus tracks). They came on the scene pretty much fully up to speed. An old favorite that always sounds fun and adventurous, for lovers of that mostly instrumental, guitar-oriented, surf meets Middle Eastern sound, with a nod or two (or three) to Can along the way.

...my favorite CD from the past few years is Frankie and the Pool Boys.

They are an offshoot of Pollo Del Mar who also does some nice surf tunes.
