I just picked up Spiritchaser and Into The Labyrinth by Dead Can Dance. Haven't listened to Spiritchaser yet, but am loving Labyrinth. My question is what else is out there that is pretty comparable to this stuff? Thanks.

I am in love with Dead Can Dance too..., posted on June 25, 2000 at 15:55:54
I picked up "Into The Labyrinth" and "A Passage in Time" just few days ago, both are really wonderful. Now I have "Aion" & "Toward The within" on my wish list, and will surely look for more later. It's a bit hard to compare the music of Dead Can Dance with anything else, it seems to be unique for me. I can recall the music of Popol Vuh, Deuter, Gandalf and Jade Warrior as also having such strong Eastern influences, but not being similar to Dead Can Dance. If that can interest you, I'd suggest these wonderful titles:

- POPOL VUH - "Hosiana Mantra", "In Den Garten Pharaos" and "Eis Jäger & Sieben Jäger"

- DEUTER - "Nirvana Road", "Cicada" and "Land of Enchantment"

- GANDALF - "Fantasia", "Gallery of Dreams" and "Echoes From Ancient Dreams"

- JADE WARRIOR - "Breathing The Storm"

Hope this helps.

Demetrio.

Here are three suggestions for recent albums that have a somewhat similar exotic and Middle Eastern sound and are of stereo demo quality as an added attraction.

Vas: Sunyata
This is the 1997 debut on the Narada label of Iranian born/Indian educated Azam Ali and Californian Greg Ellis. Their music is similar to DCD at times as Ali sings, like Lisa Gerrard, in a language of her own design to express emotions too intricate for simple words. There is also a strong emphasis on the percussion aspect of the sound and Ellis fuses Middle Eastern, African and American jazz to create the rhythms. This one is a sure bet for DCD fans but stands out as very unique and in some ways more pure and passionate that any of DCDs albums. Also check out the 1999 'Offerings' which I have read is very good but have not yet heard.

Robert Rich: Seven Veils
This is a 1998 instrumental release on the Hearts of Space label that I have seen described as "ancient music from another planet" which may not be far off. A blend of Middle Eastern percussion and constanly changing ambient atmospheres textured with his lap steel guitar and bamboo flute along with others contributing cello, violin, bass and occasional searing electric guitar. A very high level of melodic and rhythmic sophistication on this album will keep you exploring it for a long time.

David Sylvian: Dead Bees On A Cake
This is also an excellent sounding album released in 1999. It is quite a departure from previous albums by Sylvian and was about four years in the making, using a wide range of first rate musicians from all parts of the world and outstanding production to create an atmospheric and exotic sound. Sylvian sings in a deep, rich voice and it is used very well on this collection of songs expressing an intimacy and sometimes spiritual mysticism that is very comforting.

I've heard a lot about these guys on our boards. Must be time to take the plunge. "A passage in time" would seem to be the place to start? Is that a reasonable assumption ? Thanks, Chris.

The only Triniti Session I know of is by The Cowboy Junkies, and I would agree that they have the same delicate athmosphere as Dead Can Dance. A little confusion here...?

Yeah, Chris, "A Passage in Time" is a great starting point IMO. Hope you also enjoy this stuff.

Happy listening.

I played the debut album by All About Eve the other day. This might fit your description. All About Eve was an English band that played a mixture of gothic (they toured a lot with the Mission), folk and rock. Vocalist Julianne Regan was one of the main attractions of the band. The debut 'All About Eve' from 1988 (produced by The Yardbirds' Paul Samwell Smith) had the best tunes.
Hope this helps,
Robert

Peter Ulrich's solo album "Pathways and Dawns"(he was the DCD percussionist) is quite good, if a bit more "pop" than DCD, but should be a pretty much sure hit for any DCD fan.

Brendan Perry's first solo outing since the
death of DCD, Eye of the Hunter is a
sonic feast. Got it on vinyl and couldn't listen
to any ceedees the rest of the night. As for the
music, it shares the usual DCD influences, but
runs a tad slower throughout.

First i think go for more dead can dance since those albunm you mention are their later efforts so think of Aion, toward the within. also the stheaphen reccomendation is great. Also in my wish list are the solo outings of Lisa Gerrad( because i question myself i'm in love od the dead or this girl extraordinaire voice). Enjoy.

I have quite a few DCD albums on both CD & LP, the latter are stunning, well worth UK import prices.

4AD vinyl is pretty reliable. I have a few Cocteau Twins LPs and This Mortal Coil that also sound great. You can order them direct from their web site. To see all the vinyl, don't select an artiist in the search form, just select Vinyl LP, or 12" or 10" for the Format and do the search. My favorite album for sOnics AND music is Serpent's Egg.

You might like some of the Cocteau Twins releases. Echoes in a Shallow Bay and Four Caledar Cafe are worth a try. Also must listens are by This Mortal Coil, "It'll All End In Tears" (which has the immortal Song To the Siren and pre-DCD Lisa and Brendan plus various Cocteaus assisting on some of the tracks)"Filigree and Shadow".By TMC is also a worthwhile album.

Brended Perry did a collaboration with another artist and the album was heavily Gothoic/Chant. Can't remember it off the top of my head, though.

A quick rummage through the racks and the internet and I came up with the group I was trying to remember, and som emore stuff that is DCD-related.

The collaboration Brendan Perry was involved with was: Elijah's Mantle on the album: Angels of Perversity, which is defintely rooted in the Gothic/Medeavel elements of earlier DCD music. EM have several other albums of estoeric stuff available on Import in the US. Brendan Perry also heped out Co Ex on the album: Synaesthesia

I also found out that Lisa Gerrard has contributed a couple of unreleased tracks for a compilation album that also includes work by Elijah's Mantle and Co Ex (I bet they all hang out together in graveyards, or something). The album is: These Wings Without Feathers on the De Nova Da Capo label (see link below).

Oh well, time to light the candles and burn some incence.

I am a longtime DCD fan. I am also quite fond of "This Mortal Coil" and "His Name is Alive". Both of those are worth looking into as well.
