Based on messages below, I am thinking of installing an E-MU 0404 soundcard, primarily for listening. I notice that the analog inputs and outputs are 1/4", rather than RCAs. Can anyone tell me why this is so, and (more important) what interconnects you recommend between the card and my preamp (Conrad Johnson PV10AL)?

Thanks.

I had the same question. What I was told is that the 1/4" plugs provide better electrical contact vs an RCA connection. Also, in studios they are less likely to become loose.

For the EMU, as I recall, it has another benefit (please check me on this): you can use a mono plug for an unbalanced connection to your amp, or a stereo connection for a balanced connection (with the appropriate cables and the ability of your amp to accept a balance connection of course.

I tried the top of the line balanced 1/4" cables at guitar center but I don't recall the name (they were about $100 for a 15' foot pair). For cables that don't claim to be audiophile quality, they were very good.

Appreciate the information. Were the cables you tried 1/4" at one end and RCA at the other (i.e., compatible with my preamplifier)?

Thanks.

Since my amp can accept a balanced connection, the cables I tried were 1/4 to balanced. However, they do have the same brand of cable with 1/4 to RCA.

Thanks. I went to their site but did not find the cables you mention. If you could provide brand name, would be grateful.

Thanks.
