Is the asylum getting any closer to a recommended playback path for digital audio, or is it the same old quarrel between a few self-proclaimed "experts" as to how digital audio should sound?

I seriously doubt you will ever find one with the best way to deliver a digital source, amplify a signal, play a record or hear the result with a speaker.

We all have taken different paths and have differing priorities and musical tastes. I prefer using a purpose built compact streamer with the heavy work done away from the listening room. Others find having the computer in their system just fine. Some even prefer continuing to spin shiny disks to having a consolidated digital library. :)

All good. Pick your own poison. There is no single path to nirvana.

There are many paths up the mountain, thankfully we are blessed with many differing views here.

From fmak to AbeCollins and everything in between and on either side.

First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass

Why would "the asylum" have a recommended playback path for digital audio? It's a discussion forum for varying opinions. Do any of the online forums or audio magazines have an official recommended playback path?

Are you looking for a recommendation? I'm still waiting for Bose to weigh in.

Happy New Year!

...for all things analog as well as digital. Tube v. solid state, this phono cartridge v. that one, regular fistfights over speakers -- all of these and many more are still part and parcel of the scene in the analog world. Its been that way for decades.

Why should digital be an exception?

Ah! It's good to see that the inmates are still a happy bunch!

Happy New Year to the lot of you and may you find many happy discoveries, audio and other wise, in the coming year!

The mod seems to do a good job of keeping the place civil.
