i just downloaded audiograbber (after avast blocked me from being able to do that!) but can't use it for "line in sampling" as i've done on several computers for probably 20 years by now. i'm guessing it's ANOTHER user hostile windows "upgrade", oh, like the one where they blocked access to the mixer in XP so there was no way for me to adjust levels to make cassette dubs with my art external soundcard that gave too hot a signal at even the absolute lowest input, probably because it was designed for mics, but with access to the mixer, i should have been able to stop clipping as the sound from the art wasn't distorting.

audacity can't recognize it either as well as ANOTHER alternative i tried that gave a very similar "no soundcard found" error message DESPITE both my soundcard & headphone outs showing as working properly.

so, how do i get W10 to STFU and let me use audiograbber?

i'm not trying to rip CDs, i'm trying to record streaming audio. i IMAGINE audiograbber will still work just fine with CDs as it always has because that has nothing to do with the soundcard. i need it to recognize my soundcard though to record streaming audio from youtube etc.

Here's what I use on the Mac to capture audio from any application. I've used it to extract audio from music videos, YouTube, iTunes, WebEx conference calls, streaming music, etc. I'm not sure if there's an equivalent for PC.

oh, i guess i should have said FREEWARE.

what i REALLY want is to go back using audiograbber. it's what i know, and if it weren't for something fishy going on with W10, it would work. i've used it with W98 & XP on 4 or 5 different used PCs, yet this "brand new" one is "busted".

i had the same problem with "free sound recorder" which also couldn't find my soundcard, along with audacity as well. it has to be something W10 is doing that blocks line in recording. i also tried "free audio recorder", but that apparently only records crappy mp3s even though the description i read claimed multiple formats including WAVs.

i found the problem after opening advanced options in the volume control. i probably tried to resolve the issue before using the confounding new control panel and got frustrated with it. i probably turned stereo mix off myself because when it's ALSO enabled with the mixer, it has a lag that creates a really annoying reverb feedback problem. it needs to be enabled to allow software to see the soundcard, but it also needs to be muted in the mixer to prevent delay feedback.

i'm not 100% sure, but i THINK riding the input gain with the device fader instead of using the one for firefox results in recordings with a little bit better fidelity, i'm guessing because the soundcard isn't at 100% and distorting a little.

if you ever have a similar problem, just make sure stereo mix is enabled.
