I was at our company's annual "Storage Summit" last month to get a snapshot of the state of the industry. Here are a few tidbits of publicly available information from some slide decks that I managed to get. Nothing proprietary here but it might be of interest to some of you. I do not have the slide notes but most of it is self explanatory.

Most reliable HDD manufacturer. Shorter on the bar chart is better.

There's a difference between eMLC & cMLC but the manufacturers don't always advertise the differences.
Hint, eMLC is noticeably more expensive. (This is NAND flash memory technology used in SSDs)

Practically no one uses SLC anymore. It is cost prohibitive and fading away and pretty much
replaced by eMLC. I would shy away from cheap TLC even for consumer music server use.

Unlike many others, Samsung is also a leader in NAND flash manufacturing. Many SSD brands you see in the market basically package NAND flash from others. We use Intel for our enterprise class SSD and other NAND flash based storage.

Chart is for NAND Flash specifically, but Intel remains the leader in overall semiconductor market share worldwide.
