Or is there some other software from another vendor that is more up to date/better?

Not sure what you are trying to accomplish. LMS is being modded by a community of enthusiasts and you can get a Newer version of it by clicking the link below. What you should be asking is if you can use different hardware for LMS.... And that answer is Yes..... You can get a Raspberry Pi and Picoreplayer and be up and running within minutes.

I'm running a 7.9.0 build from two days ago. Not sure how much more "up to date" it gets. It doesn't have the deep tagging and relational capabilities of Roon, but that's not important to me.

Better? In what way? Folks with massive libraries have complained that adding new content takes "too long". A rescan of my 900 album / 225 movie database takes twenty four seconds.

In the main system, I'm using a new Sonore Micro Rendu player powered by and HD-Plex linear power supply running the same LMS that also feeds a Touch, an Oppo 103 and a Roku player.

"...from two days ago..."

You talk about automatic generated nightly builds.
It doesn't necessarily mean that anything changed from the day/month/year before. ;)

However.

I'd rather say, they keep the server alive. I'd call it maintenance mode.
There's actually not much to do. The server runs rock-stable since years.
Stuff like Tidal-Plugin, DSD/DoP support and more still get introduced as
community efforts.
There's IMO not much missing.

The problem is with devices like SB Touch or NAS systems, which do not receive updates of the server software anymore.
On these devices a pretty outdated LMS might not be the bleeding edge package.

That's why I always recommend to install LMS on a PC. And make that PC
a server. This way you're in charge and in the position to keep the package up2date.

Enjoy.

Updates occur regularly, but rarely on a daily basis. The change log for 7.9 is quite lengthy should you read it.

That has been my experience for the past seven years. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

On these devices a pretty outdated LMS might not be the bleeding edge package.

As an IT developer who understands the challenges, I prefer the stability and refinement of slightly "trailing edge" products. Works seamlessly with the microRendu player which took my system performance up a couple of notches. :)

And make that PC a server.

Agreed. In that regard, I'm kinda old school. I've maintained a desktop computer for over twenty years for both business and pleasure. While I have a business laptop, I prefer the lower cost, expandability and ease of using multiple monitor setups with desktops. Actually, mine lives inside the desk and runs 24/7.

I do, however, have a company laptop that I take upstairs to record vinyl rips using Audacity and an HRT Line Streamer.

I read it.

7.9.0 exists for years !!!

Am I surprised to see a bunch of updates/new functions??
Of course not. I follow all the stuff pretty closely.

The point is that the OP should understand the background of nightly builds.

One more.

What I meant with bleeding edge is the latest LMS 7.9.0 build.

Many commercial devices run much older LMS versions.
And that certainly leads to a lack of features like e.g. DoP support.

Two dozen features / enhancements were added along with a slightly greater number of bugs fixed.

Continuity and refinement is a good thing. :)

Now you know why the SBT is HISTORY. The new, far superior streamers allow you to use ANY compliant server software you please. Stuck with LMS? For what. Repeat. SBT is yesterdays news. Sold both of mine for a thousand dollars. Tons of clinging suckers out there.
